After
appearing on YES Network prior to the Yankees final game before the All-Star
break, Yankees’ GM Brian Cashman told Michael Kay of YES Network that the
Yankees would be “careful buyers” at this year’s trade deadline. Despite the
team scuffling to the All-Star break with a 7-18 record over their last 25
games, the Yankees remain on top of the Wild Card standings, and just 3.5 games
behind the hot Boston Red Sox.
As “careful buyers,” that essentially means that Cashman will stick to the plan and hold onto his most valuable assets in the minor leagues. With that, top prospect Gleyber Torres is not likely going anywhere, and Cashman would probably like to hold onto his other top five prospects including Clint Frazier and others. In fact, Cashman stated that he's already turned down trade offers.
“We have a long-term plan that I think people are seeing the excitement from, and we’re definitely not going to deviate from that,” said Cashman. “…Part of that long-term plan is in the short term — winning now and putting out the best effort possible, but not at the expense of what we feel can lead us to more championships, plural. … If we can find that balancing act and retain the players we desperately need to retain … I think that’s the walk we’re trying to walk.”
So, the Yankees will have to get creative at the deadline. There are plenty of upgrades on the trade market in the bullpen and at first base which are the Yankees glaring areas of need. The Yankees have already been linked to Brad Hand and Brandon Maurer of the Padres, as well as AJ Ramos and David Phelps of the Marlins.
At first base, the Yankees have also been linked to Justin Bour of the Marlins, Lucas Duda of the Mets, and there are other first base candidates that include Yonder Alonso of the Athletics, and Todd Frazier of the White Sox. The Yankees may also look for a reunion with third baseman Martin Prado.
The upcoming weekend series will be very telling as to where the Yankees stand as they have a four-game set with the first place Boston Red Sox. For now, stay up to date on BBB for the latest news, updates and rumors regarding the New York Yankees.
