MLB trade rumors: Sonny Gray trade talks stalling over Yankees unwillingness to trade Gleyber Torres or Clint Frazier

It was reported yesterday by Bob Klapish of USA Today that the Yankees and Athletics were making some serious progress with the Yankees leading the pack in the Sonny Gray trade discussions, though the two clubs were not close to a deal. Now, Jon Heyman of FanRag sports reports that the reason for the clubs being far apart may be due to the Athletics requesting either Gleyber Torres or Clint Frazier as the return in a trade package.

It is worth noting that the A's have been hunting for top prospects, as they reportedly asked for Ronald Acuna of the Braves, who is their top prospect and is the no. 8 prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline. Torres and Frazier are currently the Yankees top two prospects in the organization, with Torres being the third ranked prospect in all of baseball and Frazier being ranked 27th. Coming into the deadline, Cashman noted the Yankees would be careful buyers and has remained steadfast in his statement that his top prospects are off-limits.

Torres was hitting his stride in Triple-A before an awkward slide into home plate resulting in a torn UCL of his non-throwing arm ended his season. Prior to the injury, Torres was hitting .309/.406/.457 with two homers, four doubles, one triple and two stolen bases in Scranton. As for Frazier, the 22-year-old has been the hot-hand for the Yankees of late as he’s hitting .284/.299/.473 with three homers, six doubles and two triples since his call-up.

There have been conflicting reports on this matter, as it was also reported by Jon Morosi of MLB Network just a few days ago that the A’s were “prioritizing young center fielders.” In the same report, Morosi noted that the Athletics really liked Estevan Florial, the team’s fifth ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline.

For Gray, he is 6-5 this season with a 3.43 ERA, 3.25 FIP, 1.18 WHIP, and 8.4 K/9, which is his highest since his rookie year. He has also seen his value increase over his last six starts with a 4-2 record, 1.37 ERA and .164 BAA.

 This rumor is something to keep an eye on as we inch closer and closer to the July 31 trade deadline. Gray seems to be the perfect fit for pinstripes, but if the Athletics insist on receiving Torres or Frazier as the return, this deal simply is not going to get done. However, if Cashman can convince Billy Beane to accept a package headlined by Florial or Jorge Mateo, the Yankees could have Gray and potentially Yonder Alonso on the roster come August 1.
