MLB Trade Rumors: Yankees heavily scouting White Sox David Robertson
The Yankees have been active in trade rumors for relievers, and the Yankees are now heavily scouting David Robertson of the White Sox, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.
The Red Sox have been actively scouting both Todd Frazier and Robertson, and it seems as though it is a foregone conclusion that Frazier will be heading to Boston by the July 31 trade deadline. Though the Yankees are also interested in Frazier, they appear to be more interested in Robertson.
And the Yankees may sweep in and scoop Robertson away from the Red Sox, who are also interested in packaging Robertson with Frazier in a deal. The Yankees have plenty of background with Robertson and could probably get this deal done relatively quickly if they decide to pull the trigger.
Brian Cashman and company would welcome a reunion with the 32-year-old Robertson. Robertson was rock solid out of the Yankee bullpen as the setup man to Mariano Rivera, and he would likely return to that comfortable setup man in the event that he would return to the Bronx. As a closer, Robertson was more prone to making things interesting, but he’s silencing his critics this season.
The former Yankee is having his best season yet as the ChiSox closer with a 4-2 record, 2.78 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and a .179 batting average against. Robertson has also struck out 46 batters in 32.1 innings for a strikeouts per nine innings rate of 12.9 K/9, and he’s converted 13 of his 14 save opportunities.
Robertson is signed through 2018 where he is set to make $13 million before becoming a free agent. With Alex Rodriguez’s (yes, believe it or not) and CC Sabathia’s massive contracts coming off the books this year, that $13 million addition would not be a problem for the Yankees. Still, Cashman could likely convince White Sox GM Rick Hahn to eat some of that money in order to get the deal done.
Now, let it be known that Robertson is going to be one of the more expensive relievers on the market. Hahn is putting the Sox through a full rebuild, and he’s becoming incredibly greedy with his prospects (and it’s paying off). Nevertheless, the Yankees could surely get him without compromising the future and giving away their top prospects.
This is one of the more interesting rumors to keep an eye on as we inch closer to the deadline as it is looking like another battle between these two bitter rivals. It looks like the Yankees are in the market for relievers as they've already been linked to Brad Hand and Brandon Maurer of the Padres as well as AJ Ramos and David Phelps of the Marlins. However, they could look to reunite with their former All-Star setup man David Robertson.
