Yankees Rumors: The Yankees have expressed interest in Padres’ closer Brandon Maurer

Yesterday we wrote about a rumor that the Yankees have expressed interest in Padres’ reliever Brad Hand, but according to Joel Sherman of the NY Post, the Yankees have tossed around Brandon Maurer’s name in trade talks as well.

Maurer was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 2008 in the 23rd round. He came up as a starter, but was moved full-time to the bullpen, once he became a Padre. Maurer is currently the Friars’ closer, despite having poor numbers. In 38 appearances, he boasted a 5.60 ERA and an 0-4 record, but his peripherals illustrate that he has pitched better than his numbers suggest. His WHIP is a respectable 1.16, his strikeout to walk ratio is at a career high, and his 2.95 FIP depicts that he is pitching much better than the common stats show.


The main reason why the Yankees are likely expressing interest in Maurer is because he would likely cost much less than Brad Hand would. The Padres really like Gleyber Torres, and it is not likely the Yankees would want to give him up for a reliever. Maurer's fastball can reach the high 90's, and if the price is right, he could be a solid, low-risk addition to the Yankees' struggling bullpen.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
