MLB trade rumors: Yankees looking into Yu Darvish, Lance Lynn, Jaime Garcia with high price on Sonny Gray

The Yankees have reportedly “checked in” on Lance Lynn, Yu Darvish, and Jaime Garcia, while they also continue to closely monitor Sonny Gray. Darvish, Lynn, and Garcia would all be rentals, as Gray is locked up a few more years. With the need of a starting pitcher, the Yanks are looking into just about every guy available on the market.

The Yankees and Sonny Gray have been connected for quite some time now, but they reportedly want Gleyber Torres or Clint Frazier in a trade involving Gray. It’s been rumored that the A’s are interested in youngsters Estevan Florial and Domingo Acevedo, but apparently they want higher level prospects. The A’s have scouted every level of the Yanks farm system, but are set on getting Torres or Frazier. A deal between the A’s and Yanks is looking more and more unlikely and if the A’s stick to their asking price, the Yanks would be smart to look at other options.

The front office had shown interest in Jaime Garcia when he was with Atlanta, but was then acquired by the Twins. Even after being already traded, the Twins are likely to try and see what they could get for Garcia and veteran Ervin Santana as they fall further and further down the standings. The Yanks remain interested in the lefty Garcia who’s pitched to a 4.29 ERA and a 4.04 FIP this season across 19 starts with the Twins and Braves, both which are down from his career averages.

Darvish would be the most expensive rental of this group, but has really struggled as of late. He’s coming off a start in which he allowed ten runs, all earned, to the Marlins in 3.2 innings of work. He has had multiple quality starts in July, but that’s been downplayed by his two horrible outings. Between the start against the Marlins and his fourth of July start against the Red Sox, he pitched a combined eight innings while giving up 17 runs. His last truly impressive start was at Yankee Stadium in late June against his Japanese counterpart Masahiro Tanaka. With his recent struggles, the hefty price tag, and his injury history, it’d be smart for the Yanks to stay away from Darvish.

Lynn is perhaps the most intriguing of this bunch and has really been an underrated pitcher throughout his career. After Tommy John Surgery that forced him to miss all of 2016, he has rebounded to have a very good 2016 season. His FIP of 4.82 suggests he’s likely to decline, but he’s still pitched to a 3.21 ERA across 120.2 innings. Coming into the year, he never allowed too many home run balls, the highest of his career being 0.8 HR/9, but this year he’s doubled that to a rate of 1.6 HR/9. His WHIP of 1.10 is low, suggesting he doesn’t allow too many baserunners, but when he does, the ball is hit hard against him. His hot streak, most recently a gem against the high-powered Rockies offense, has really increased his trade value despite him being a rental. Over his last four starts, he’s allowed a combined 17 hits in 25.1 innings as well as only allowing two runs (0.71). As a rental, the Yanks should not have to give up too much to acquire Lynn.

With the fifth spot in the rotation up for grabs, the Yanks really are desperate to acquire a starter, as Luis Cessa and Caleb Smith have been unimpressive in their starts. Lynn may be the best and cheapest option of these four, as he’s shown to be a workhouse and that he’s fully recovered from his TJS.
