Yankees Roster Updates 07/14/17
The Yankees have announced a flurry of moves prior to tonight's game against the Boston Red Sox. The big news of the day, of course, is that Michael Pineda has been diagnosed with a partially torn UCL in his elbow and seems destined for Tommy John Surgery. His tenure in New York is likely over as he is set to become a free agent at season's end. Jordan Montgomery has been recalled from triple-A and will his start tonight in place of Pineda.

There is some good news, however. The Yankees have announced that designated hitter Matt Holliday, who has been battling an illness for the better part of the past three weeks, will return from the disabled list and should be in the starting lineup tonight. Starlin Castro will also make his second rehab start with Trenton as they play in Hartford, Connecticut tonight. Per Sweeny Murti of WFAN, Castro might return to the Yankees as soon as tomorrow.
Finally, newly acquired first baseman Garrett Cooper, who was initially assigned to triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre yesterday, will be activated to the 25-man roster today and will join the team in Boston. With left-hand pitcher Drew Pomeranz on the mound for Boston, we might even seen Cooper make his Major League debut tonight.

As far as the 25-man roster goes, Pineda will go on the disabled list, and in order to free up the extra roster spot to add both Holliday and Cooper, the Yankees have optioned Rob Refsnyder to Scranton/Wilkes-Barres. For now, Tyler Clippard's job remains safe. Bummer.
The Yankees will call up Bryan Mitchell, who is not currently on the roster, on Sunday as the 26th man to make a spot start in the first game of the double header. Per MLB rules, teams are allowed to carry an extra roster spot when they play double headers. Expect Mitchell to be optioned back to triple-A after his start on Sunday.
