Greg Bird to have potentially season ending ankle surgery, expected to be six week recovery

Bird had a tremendous spring and many around baseball were touting him as a breakout candidate for the 2017 season. His six hits in 60 ABs was followed up by the start of the ankle injury. It's been a certainly disappointing season after also missing all of 2016 due to a shoulder injury. Bird still figures to be a part of the Yanks long term plans at first base, considering the limited amount of internal options they have at the position.
Six weeks would place him at being fully healed around the beginning of September with a month left of regular season baseball. At this point though, it's hard to expect him back this season considering the constant pain he's dealt with even after a cortisone shot to his strange injury. He would also need to rehab and perhaps perform well at Triple-A before being back in the Bronx. By then, it would be around playoff time and with how the Yankees have been playing who knows if they’ll make it. The surgery will hopefully put an end to the injury all together and Yanks fans can only wish for a healthy Greg Bird in 2018.
