Yankees Rumors: Yankees have contacted Marlins about David Phelps and AJ Ramos
With
a need to upgrade in the bullpen, the Yankees have once again reached out to the
Miami Marlins about acquiring the services of right-handers AJ Ramos and David
Phelps, according to Joel
Sherman of the New York Post.
Both relievers are set to be free agents after next year, and would be huge additions to a Yankees bullpen that has already blown 17 saves this month, and a number of other games as the Yankees have struggled mightily over the last month.
Phelps,
30, is in his third season with the Fish after playing three with the Yankees
to begin his career. While last season was his best yet, Phelps has gone 2-4
with a 3.68 ERA, and 48 strikeouts in 44 innings. He’s also held opponents to a
.245 batting average and has a 1.27 WHIP.
Ramos,
also 30, has is in his fifth career season, and third as the Marlins’ closer.
He started slow, but now has a 2-3 record with a 3.51 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 42
strikeouts in 33.1 innings. The former All-Star has also held hitters to a very
strong.198 batting average against.
The
Yankees have become very desperate for bullpen help as they have also been
linked to Brad Hand and Brandon Maurer of the Padres recently. The Yankees have also been in talks with the Marlins about the services of Justin Bour and Martin Prado, so it is looking like the Fish and Bombers may be trade partners as we close in on the July 31 trade deadline.
