Yankees trade Rob Refsnyder to Blue Jays in exchange for minor league 1B Ryan McBroom

Earlier today, the Yankees PR department announced on Twitter that the Yankees had acquired minor league 1B Ryan McBroom in exchange for INF/OF Rob Refsnyder. Once ranked has high as the fourth best prospect in the Yankee farm system by MLB.com, Refsnyder’s tenure with the Bombers failed to live up to high expectations, and ultimately ended with his DFA last week.

After living on the Scranton shuttle for most of last year, Refsnyder was used mostly as a bench player for his time in pinstripes in 2017. He compiled 37 at bats, but hit just .135/.200/.216 (7 wRC+), with no homers or RBIs, three walks, and eight strikeouts. Yes, you read that right. SEVEN wRC+. He was painful to watch. In his career he’s hitting .241/.312/.332 (73 wRC+), with two homers (both in 2015) and 17 RBIs. It goes without saying that he did not produce like the Yankees hoped he would. So long, Ref.

McBroom, on the other hand, was hitting .243/.321/.402 (98 wRC+), with 12 homers and 54 RBIs in 96 games for the Blue Jays AA affiliate. He was ranked as the Blue Jays 30th best prospect before the trade. Not a bad return for a guy who had close to zero trade value. Let’s hope that McBroom somehow makes it to majors just so we can hear John Sterling’s home run call for him.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
