Montgomery surrenders six runs with two outs in second inning to sink Yankees in 6-1 loss

The Yankees looked to finally get over the hump and get their first series win in over a month but unfortunately fell short. Promising to be a very good matchup on paper between Jordan Montgomery and Jose Berrios turned out to be a one sided affair, with Berrios dominating over six plus innings. Montgomery out of the gates just didn’t have they command that we are used to seeing. He was able to avoid trouble in the first inning, but what did him in was the bottom of the second where Minnesota exploded for six runs (all with two outs) on five hits scattered throughout the inning. From there on out he was rather solid, limiting the Twins hitters to only two hits, yet the deficit was just too much for the Yankees to overcome as they dropped the game and the series with a 6-1 loss.

Minnesota didn’t wait very long, scoring six runs in the bottom of the second, all of which with two outs. Montgomery had the chance to get out of trouble with arguably the Twins weakest hitter at the plate in Zach Granite, who had only two major league hits to his name, came up big with a two out 2-RBI single up the middle. That was then followed by an RBI single from Eduardo Escobar and then followed up by a big three-run home-run by Miguel Sano to make it 6-0.


The score would stay that way until the top of the seventh, where the Yankees finally get on the board with a two out single off the bat of Brett Gardner, making the score 6-1.

 Newly acquired Tommy Kahnle entered in the bottom of the eighth inning, throwing a perfect inning with two strikeouts. He put his upper 90's to triple digits fastball on display to go along with his wipeout slider and devastating changeup, and looked really impressive.


Montgomery actually settled into a groove after that second inning as he retired the final 10 batters he faced. However, the Yankees bats remained dormant as they dropped the final game of the three game set 6-1 to the Minnesota Twins at Target field. The Yankees are now 0-8-2 in their last 12 series dating back to the June 11th sweep of the Baltimore Orioles.


The Yankees head out west to face the Seattle Mariners for a four game set. Tomorrow’s game is on YES at 10:10 PM EST, with the Yankees sending Luis Severino (5-4, 3.40 ERA) against Felix Hernandez (5-3, 4.20 ERA).
