BREAKING: Yankees acquire David Robertson, Tommy Kahnle and Todd Frazier from White Sox

The Yankees and the White Sox struck a blockbuster deal on Tuesday night after the Yankees officially acquired 3B/1B Todd Frazier, RHP David Robertson and RHP Tommy Kahnle. In return, the White Sox acquired a package headlined by OF Blake Rutherford that included prospects LHP Ian Clarkin, and OF Tito Polo as well as RHP Tyler Clippard.

For the Yankees, they are reuniting with Robertson who is signed through next season where he is owed $13 million. As for Kahnle, the 27-year-old is controlled through 2020. Frazier, on the other hand, is a free agent at the end of this season as he is effectively a rental who solves the Yankees problem at either first or third base.

The Yankees could elect to resign Frazier to a short term deal this offseason. Frazier has hit to a disappointing-looking .207/.328/.432 line, but he has 16 homers, 15 doubles and 44 RBIs. He has been victimized by bad luck with a .214 BABIP, and he is not a big strikeout guy for someone with good pop as he's only struck out in 21.1% of his ABs.

As for Robertson, he is having his best year with the White Sox as he's gone 4-2 with a 2.70 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, .176 BAA, and 47 strikeouts in 33.1 innings. He's also converted 13 of 14 save opportunities and is averaging 12.69 K/9 and 2.97 BB/9.

The 32-year-old reliever will presumably slot back into the eighth inning where he was comfortable in New York setting up for Aroldis Chapman. That would move Dellin Betances to the seventh inning to go along with a number of other solid relievers, including possibly the biggest prize in this deal in Kahnle, who came up through the Yankees' system.

Kahnle was lost by the Yankees after being selected in the Rule 5 Draft by the Colorado Rockies prior to the 2014 season. Since going to Chicago, the young righty has been a great piece in the bullpen.

Kahnle, 27, is having another great year as he's 1-3 with a 2.50 ERA and 0.97 WHIP to go along with 60 strikeouts in 36 innings. Opposing batters are hitting .214 off him (.218 lifetime) and he has good control as he's only walking 1.75 batters per nine innings while posting an incredible K/9 of 15.00.

Kahnle has electric stuff out of the bullpen with a high 90's fastball that can reach triple digits to go along with a devestating changeup and wipeout slider. He had been working in the late innings for the White Sox in high-leverage situations. Kahnle will now become one of the best middle relievers in the game as the Yankees can potentially shorten games exponentially.

For the White Sox, they are acquiring the Yankees’ third ranked prospect in Blake Rutherford to headline the deal. The 20-year-old outfielder was already the 30th ranked prospect in the MLB according to MLB Pipeline.

This season Rutherford was slashing .281/.342/.391 with two homers, 20 doubles and nine steals in 71 games. Despite his lack of power, the 20-year-old outfielder does project to be a solid 20-20 guy making him the prize of this deal to go along with Clarkin and Polo.

Clarkin, 22, has been a solid left-handed pitching prospect in the Yankee system despite fighting through injuries. He's had a good year in High-A Tampa with a 4-5 record, 2.62 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 58 strikeouts in 75.2 innings. He is a solid trade chip to include in this deal for White Sox GM Rick Hahn.

The last prospect in the deal is the 22-year-old Tito Polo, who the Yankees acquired for Ivan Nova last year. This season, Polo has played in both Double-A Trenton and High-A Tampa this year. He has put together a nice slash line of .298/.358/.446 with five homers, 13 doubles, seven triples, 34 RBIs and 25 steals in 72 games this year. Still, the outfielder is considered more a fringe prospect who could maybe become a fourth outfielder someday.

Finally, the Yankees are parting ways with Tyler Clippard. Clippard, 32, is 1-5 this year with a 4.95 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 42 strikeouts in 36.1 innings. Clippard recently lost his seventh inning role and was becoming a DFA candidate for the Yankees as he is set to hit free agency at the end of this year. The Yankees dealing Clippard likely made many Yankee fans happy as he has had a really rough season with the Yankees in 2017.

Though the team just filled many holes in one deal, the team may not be done trading for Major League talent.

The Yankees were linked to a number of first and third basemen over the past few weeks, as well as bullpen arms. In one deal, Cashman has solved the Yankees' bullpen issue and has provided some valuable insurance at first and third base. The club will also likely be in the market for starting pitchers over the next two weeks before the trade deadline.
