  The Yankees have pulled off their first big move of the 2021 Trade Deadline week, acquiring a much-needed lefty power bat in the form of Texas Rangers’ slugger Joey Gallo.   The trade also nets the Yankees RP  John King Joely Rodriguez .

By now, you’ve heard the rhetoric:  The Yankees need Starting Pitching .   The current pitching rotation is in shambles after a week in which they were ripped to the tune of 52 runs (48 earned) in 26 innings pitched.   Let me repeat that: 52 runs in 26 innings.   Mercifully, Domingo German was able to put an end to that streak last night, earning his 13th win, going 5.1 innings with just three earned runs, in a 9-6 victory over the Red Sox. While there is absolutely no question that this team needs to add another starting pitcher (or two) before Wednesday’s MLB Trade Deadline, there is another way the team can improve the pitching staff: by way of the bullpen. Last year we delved into various trade opportunities for the Yankees, and they ended up acquiring one of our proposed targets of J.A. Happ. In 2019, the first place Bombers will again look to the trade market for rotation help. The IL-Yankees of 2019 have lost Luis Severino, Domingo German, James Paxton, and C.C. Sabathia to injury at some point this year, and Severino is still on the IL. With the uncertainty of Severino's return to form and the heaps of question marks surrounding the rest of the rotation, it is obvious the Yankees could use another arm to the rotation.  AP

Now, I started writing this article before the injury to Masahiro Tanaka, so the Yankees’ need for a starting pitcher has changed in the last few days. When Domingo German originally joined the Yankees’ starting rotation back in early May, it was believed that he would have around two months to show what he could do as a fulltime starter before the return of Jordan Montgomery. That return is obviously not going to happen until next season and following the injury to Tanaka the Yankees need to acquire a starter appears greater than ever. Coming into this year’s trade deadline, Brian Cashman claimed the Yankees would be “careful buyers.” With that, Cashman was looking for controllable assets without compromising the future, and he did just that. In his first move, Cashman dealt a potentially blocked prospect in Blake Rutherford, often-injured arm in Ian Clarkin, lower level prospect in Tito Polo and struggling reliever Tyler Clippard to the Chicago White Sox for David Robertson, Tommy Kahnle and Todd Frazier . Then, the Yankees went out and acquired lefty Jaime Garcia from the Twins for pitching prospects Zack Littell and Dietrich Enns. Finally, the Yankees acquired Sonny Gray in a final-hour splash for prospects Dustin Fowler, Jorge Mateo, and James Kaprielian. As the trade deadline approaches, the Yankees are still looking to upgrade their rotation after adding Twins lefty Jaime Garcia early this morning. The Yankees have been linked to numerous starting pitchers this month such as Texas’ Yu Darvish and Oakland’s Sonny Gray. As reported this morning by FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman, Brian Cashman continues to wheel and deal adding Jaime Garcia and cash considerations from the Twins for the Yankees' 22nd ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline in Zack Littell, and unranked LHP Dietrich Enns. Many of us woke up to news that the Yankees had acquired left-handed starter Jaime Garcia from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Minor League pitchers Zack Littell and Dietrich Enns. Garcia is certainly an improvement over the likes of Caleb Smith and Luis Cessa, but I'd argue only incrementally. In order to go on a run deep into the playoffs, the Yankees must acquire a top line starter. Sonny Gray, who happens to be under team control until 2020, remains the answer. Garcia is a middle of the rotation starter, and he'll most likely help, but it's still not enough. Brian Cashman's job is not complete just yet. There is still one important move left to make.
