Creating a Yankees' trade package: Marcus Stroman Part Two
Last year we delved into various trade opportunities for the Yankees, and they ended up acquiring one of our proposed targets of J.A. Happ. In 2019, the first place Bombers will again look to the trade market for rotation help. The IL-Yankees of 2019 have lost Luis Severino, Domingo German, James Paxton, and C.C. Sabathia to injury at some point this year, and Severino is still on the IL. With the uncertainty of Severino's return to form and the heaps of question marks surrounding the rest of the rotation, it is obvious the Yankees could use another arm to the rotation.

In this article, we will look into various trade possibilities for the Yankees before the July 31st deadline.
Note: It is incredibly difficult to predict these trades accurately. The preferences of both teams involved are mostly unknown, so guessing prospects traded is not an exact science. What these articles provide is an entertaining exercise to get to know some possible trade targets and pieces. Enjoy!
Last year I proposed a possible trade package for the then-struggling Marcus Stroman here, and rumors are the club is looking again into the native New Yorker. The 5'8" starter has improved in almost every single important stat in 2019 despite his 6-11 record. He has increased strikeouts and whiff rate, decreased walks, hits, home runs. His hard-hit balls have risen, however, but the results are still there. In 21 starts, Stroman has eleven starts of one-earned run or less, and only three starts of over three earned runs resulting in a 2.96 ERA. Although the righties velocity hasn't improved much since 2018, his location and swing and miss ability have bounced back, rising back to his 2017 numbers.
Stroman has also not shied away from joining the Bronx Bombers, even stating that he was built for the bright lights of Yankee Stadium. The Long-Islander wants to return home. He might as well be wearing a "TRADE ME" sign around his neck, but what would it take to pry Stroman from the Blue Jays?
Stroman is an attractive trade piece as he is under arbitration through 2020 and is only 28 years old. Also, the Blue Jays aren't going to be thrilled sending a young, controllable pitcher to their division rivals, despite their current rebuild state.

The Yankees need pitching, it is a huge need even if Severino comes back healthy. In the last six games, the Yankee starters have a sickening 19.25 ERA, and they honestly look lost. It would be silly for the New York brass to just hope their staff rebounds. However, they cannot part with their most valuable prospects. They may need pitchers, but Cashman cannot overpay and gut their thinned out farm system even further.
The Package: Yankees receive RHP Marcus Stroman, and Blue Jays receive RHP Jonathan Loaisiga OF Estevan Florial and RHP Garrett Whitlock
Hold off the pitchforks, this may seem like an overpay for New York fans, and an underpay for Toronto fans (usually a good sign) but hear me out. For Blue Jay fans, you're not getting Gleyber Torres or Miguel Andujar so stop there. I do not think Cashman is willing to part with Devi Garcia at this point for anyone short of a sure thing. From here Toronto gains a top 100 prospects with Florial, an MLB ready pitcher in Loaisiga, and a low-end starter/long reliever in Whitlock. As from the Yankees, you get out without giving up Frazier, Andujar, Torres, and Devi, which is a big win.
The Yankees farm system may not be as deep as it was a few years ago, but it is stacked in outfield talent. With Florial's growth stunted by injuries, the team can afford to send him off. If Florial gets healthy, the Blue Jays will receive a plus defender in center field with surprising pop as a blazing fast leadoff hitter. This is obviously a risk-reward situation for both teams, but a necessary one. The lack of proven starting pitchers available on the market will drive up Stroman's price a bit, but not to astronomical proportions.
