BREAKING: Yankees sign top international prospect, outfielder Jasson Dominguez
Mike Trout, Mickey Mantle, Maurice Jones-Drew, and a martian are just some of the comparisons new Yankees' prospect Jasson Dominguez is getting this from scouts and media alike. Although it has been rumored for a long time, the club finally made it official today that they will be signing the phenom to a contract including a huge $5 million signing bonus. The 16-year-old outfielder joins a New York farm system that has slipped in recent years due to promotions and trades, and will likely slot near the top of the prospects lists.
The natural centerfielder has a rare combination of speed and power that has wowed scouts since his arrival at the Noba Academy at age 13. His pop from both sides of the plate is jaw-dropping, already putting exit velocity numbers that would rank him in the elite of the elite in baseball, and again, he is only 16.

Jasson Dominguez is 16 years old and his swing is so damn beautiful. Can he please be in the lineup like this year for #Yankees? Hahaha, but pay this kid. pic.twitter.com/RV9JNpTBbp— Max Wildstein (@MaxWildstein) February 7, 2019
The Yankees are currently flush with outfielders on the big league roster, with the likes Estevan Florial, Clint Frazier topping off the farm system, so Jasson will have plenty of time to develop if he needs. However, scouts are raving on his impressive stature already, and don't think there is much room nor need to grow. He will work on his skills in the minors of course, but projecting his arrival to the Bronx may be a bit tricker than other prospects. Gary Sanchez was signed at 16 years old and debut at almost 23 after five years in the minors, but other prospects like Bryce Harper, Juan Soto, and Vladmir Guerrero Jr. all debuted just before or just after their 20th birthday with barely three years in the minors. If what the scouts are saying is true, could the outfielders be ready for a big league promotion by 2022 or even 2021?
Only two years in the Yankees system may be asking too much out of Dominguez, especially since the Bombers do not need another outfielder as currently constituted. It is more likely that the expected date for the outfielder is around 2022 or 2023. However, Brett Gardner will likely not be retained at the end of the season, Clint Frazier and Estevan Florial are the centers of plenty of trade talks, and the Yankees have faced plenty of injuries among their outfielders on the major league level already. There could be a chance that an opening appears for Jasson if he is ready to come up sooner rather than later.
Either way, the Yankees started off the international signing period with a bang bringing in El Marciano, and the league will be watching his rise to the big leagues very closely.
