After all that controversy, the Yankees made the only decision they could: slotting 21-year-old breakout sensation Anthony Volpe as the youngest Opening Day shortstop since The Captain.
The Yankees will be watching the World Series from their couches for the 13th consecutive season, Aaron Judge is a free agent with no guarantee of his return, the Yankees are the laughingstock of the league this week after playing an embarrassing 2004 Red Sox ALCS comeback montage as motivation from their own 3-0 ALCS deficit. Oh yeah, and did we mention we lost to Houston AGAIN? Things are very-bad, no-good in Yankeeland right now as we embark on another offseason of frustrations and questions about where things went so wrong. The writers of the BBB each weigh in on the state of the team and the franchise as a whole. The New York Yankees entered the 2021 season as World Series favorites but struggled through mediocrity and general malaise over the course of the entire season before fizzling out well short of their goal in the American League Wild Card Game at the hands of hated rivals Boston Red Sox. Two weeks after their playoff elimination, it was announced Manager Aaron Boone's contract would be renewed for three more seasons with a fourth-year option. New York Post/Getty Images After missing the last month and a half due to knee surgery from a left meniscus tear suffered during spring training, the reigning MLB home run king approaches his 2021 debut in Tampa next week against the Rays. His presence could provide an extra jolt to a Yankees lineup that has shockingly struggled to begin the season. Luke Voit finished the 2020 regular season with an MLB leading 22 home runs, a slash line of .277/.338/.610, and an OPS of .948 which is comparable to the red-hot Giancarlo Stanton. A New York roster lauded for its outstanding depth from the 1 to 9 spots in recent years can't seem to get any production outside of the top of the lineup. Especially from the first base spot that has seen a rotation of DJ LeMahieu, Mike Ford, and the now retired Jay Bruce, with the latter two combining for a paltry .100/.086/.267 and 6 RBIs, to 20 strikeouts. Even if Voit cannot repeat his 2020 pace, anything is better than what the Bombers have gotten so...
Another season has come and gone and the Yankees are once again title-less. The writers of the BBB weigh in on what went right this year, what went wrong and what this team needs to do to finally get over the hump next season. Photo Credit: Gregory Bull/AP
No matter how you felt about the deadline, it progressed differently than most would have expected, given the Yankees lack of moves. While it is undebatable that this team still has World Series talent, it is still unlike a championship contender to not address its most glaring needs. Here is what our staff had to say about what transpired: NJ.com
Last year we delved into various trade opportunities for the Yankees, and they ended up acquiring one of our proposed targets of J.A. Happ. In 2019, the first place Bombers will again look to the trade market for rotation help. The IL-Yankees of 2019 have lost Luis Severino, Domingo German, James Paxton, and C.C. Sabathia to injury at some point this year, and Severino is still on the IL. With the uncertainty of Severino's return to form and the heaps of question marks surrounding the rest of the rotation, it is obvious the Yankees could use another arm to the rotation. AP
Mike Trout, Mickey Mantle, Maurice Jones-Drew, and a martian are just some of the comparisons new Yankees' prospect Jasson Dominguez is getting this from scouts and media alike. Although it has been rumored for a long time, the club finally made it official today that they will be signing the phenom to a contract including a huge $5 million signing bonus. The 16-year-old outfielder joins a New York farm system that has slipped in recent years due to promotions and trades, and will likely slot near the top of the prospects lists. @jassondominguez_7
After battling for a big win last night, the Yankees looked to CC Sabathia to not only clinch a series win but to take first place in the division as well. The Rays hoping to hold their spot atop the AL East went with the opener, Ryne Stanek. After going down early in this game, the Yankees were able to strike back to tie the game in the top of the sixth. However, a messy bottom half cost them that chance to control their division this weekend, losing 7-2 to Tampa. Getty Images It was a rocky start for Sabathia as he let up two early solo home runs in the second and third innings to Avisail Garcia and Yandy Diaz respectively. Luckily, CC was able to settle down limiting the damage to those two runs in his start. @raysbaseball In the fifth, Gleyber Torres continued his hot streak with his second hit of the day, bringing his average to over .330 in his last 28 at-bats. Another “red hot” Baby Bomber, Clint Frazier (18 RBI) laced a double off the wall in left field to drive ...
The scene was set for the young budding Bomber squad last fall after finishing their season a game away from a World Series berth. They were the team that arrived a year too early, and another deep playoff run would be the goal, but then an old friend threw a wrench in those plans. Derek Jeter put gargantuan slugger Giancarlo Stanton on the market, and Stanton dictated his transfer with a full no-trade clause. The Giants and Cardinals among others threw their name into the ring, but who did he choose? The Yankees and Dodgers, it seemed to be a battle of baseballs powerhouses, but the Yankees had an advantage over their former neighbors, payroll flexibility. They were able to use this into an absolute steal of the reigning NL MVP, and the Yankees were thrust into a world series or bust year. The season was historic, they set the season home run record without Gary Sanchez, Didi Gregorius, Greg Bird, and Aaron Judge for most if not all of the year, but it ended in a bust at the hands of...
Trade deadline summary: Yankees received: JA Happ, Zach Britton, Lance Lynn, Luke Voit, maximum amount of international spending money Yankees traded: Brandon Drury, Billy McKinney, Tyler Austin, Luis Rijo, Chasen Shreve, Giovanny Gallegos, Adam Warren, Caleb Frare, Dillon Tate, Cody Carroll, Josh Rogers Here is how our staff perceived the deadline: Photo Credit: NJ.com
The Yankees may have won big last night against the Kansas City Royals, but suffered one of their most significant losses of the season when they lost Aaron Judge for at least the next three to four weeks to an ulnar styloid fracture after being hit by a pitch on his right wrist. This injury sent the Bronx Faithful into a panic; they conducted a candlelight vigil at Yankee stadium for their wounded outfielder, and everyone suggesting their ideas of how Brian Cashman and company should fill the enormous hole left by their gargantuan slugger. AP
Last year Cashman acquired Sonny Gray, Jaime Garcia, David Robertson, Tommy Khanle, and Todd Frazier before the July 31st deadline, which helped drive the Bombers to game seven of the ALCS, but they gave up some of their better prospect in the process. The team has its sights set on a championship, so GM Brian Cashman will undoubtedly upgrade the starting pitching at the deadline, but who and for what? ESPN

As we close in on the Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline on July 31st, it's about that time of year where we start analyzing potential trade targets as well as which prospects might be on the move as part of those deals. Our own Maxx Hotton recently completed a series of pieces in which he previewed potential trade packages for Jacob deGrom , Cole Hamels , JA Happ , and Madison Bumgarner . However, the trade deadline (as well as the weeks immediately following the conclusion of the World Series) are also a time for teams to starting thinking about future roster constructions and get their 40-man rosters in shape.
