Bombers drop chance for AL East lead, lose 7-2 to Tampa
After battling for a big win last night, the Yankees looked to CC Sabathia to not only clinch a series win but to take first place in the division as well. The Rays hoping to hold their spot atop the AL East went with the opener, Ryne Stanek. After going down early in this game, the Yankees were able to strike back to tie the game in the top of the sixth. However, a messy bottom half cost them that chance to control their division this weekend, losing 7-2 to Tampa.
It was a rocky start for Sabathia as he let up two early solo home runs in the second and third innings to Avisail Garcia and Yandy Diaz respectively. Luckily, CC was able to settle down limiting the damage to those two runs in his start.
In the fifth, Gleyber Torres continued his hot streak with his second hit of the day, bringing his average to over .330 in his last 28 at-bats. Another “red hot” Baby Bomber, Clint Frazier (18 RBI) laced a double off the wall in left field to drive Torres home to cut the lead to one.
DJ LeMahieu launched his second home run of the year to tie the game at two in the sixth, but this stalemate would not last very long.
Johnathan Holder replaced CC Sabathia in the bottom of the sixth, leading to the ugly bottom half of the inning. Avisail Garcia stole second and advanced to third on an E2 that should’ve been an E4 on LeMaiheu as Gary Sanchez’ throw was practically perfect. After a walk, Willy Adames singled to LeMaiheu who bobbled the transfer, allowing a run to give Tampa the lead. Ji Man Choi singled again to DJ who couldn’t make the deep throw for the third out, allowing a fourth run to provide Tampa with a 4-2 lead.
After a quick top of the 7th, Holder was replaced by Nestor Cortes Jr. who after a strong first inning, would allow a three-run home run to Diaz in the eighth, extending the Rays lead to five. The Bronx bats went cold in the last three innings of the game, failing in nine straight at-bats to produce a runner.
The Bombers were not able to land another punch to get back into this game, falling 8-2 to the Rays. New York sits 1.5 games out of first place, looking to Masahiro Tanaka to cut that back down to a half game when they retake the field at the Trop to face AL Cy Young champ Blake Snell in the rubber game at 1:00 pm.
CC surrendered two earned runs over five innings with three this, four walks, and two strikeouts, bringing his era to 3.26. Holder would be the losing pitcher for the Yankees (2-1 4.50 ERA). For Tampa, Yonny Chirinos record the win with two runs in four innings pitched.
