Yankees cap off four-game sweep of O’s with 6-5 win

The Yankees have been one of the hottest teams in baseball over the past month, and that trend continued for the team in their four-game sweep of the lowly Orioles.  The Yanks bats were hot all series, scoring 34 runs in the four-game set, capped off with Thursday's thrilling 6-5 win.  Masahiro Tanaka shook off some early trouble in the second inning to pitch six strong innings, giving up just one run.

Tanaka loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning, but found a way to get out of the jam with minimal damage allowing the only run he would give up all day.  It took the Yankees until the fifth inning to even the score after a Clint Frazier solo home run to left, his ninth of the season.

The Bombers then rallied and took the lead in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. That brought up the legend, Gio Urshela, who singled in two runs, giving the Yankees a 3-1 lead.  The single pushed Urshela to a perfect 4-4 on the year with the bases loaded. 

The Yanks would add to their lead over their next couple innings.  In the seventh, Austin Romine hit an RBI single to score Thairo Estrada, and then Luke Voit hit a solo homerun in the eighth to extend the lead to 5-1.

The Orioles had a monster inning in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game up at 5.  Jonathan Holder, who pitched a scoreless seventh inning, was called upon again in the eighth, but was unable to record an out, allowing the first three batters he faced to reach.  With the score now 5-2, Tommy Kahnle was called upon, but he surrendered a game-tying three-run homer to Renato Nunez.

Michael Kay did not call the game, but the Yankees had a rally in their bones nonetheless.  With two outs in the top of the ninth, Aaron Boone sent Gleyber Torres to pinch hit for Thairo Estrada, followed by Gary Sanchez to pinch hit for Austin Romine, the two guys who have dominated the O’s all season.  Gleyber worked a walk followed by a Gary single.  DJ LeMahieu walked to load the bases for Aaron Hicks, who then also worked himself a walk to give the Yankees a one-run lead entering the ninth.  Zack Britton came in to close the door and complete the four-game sweep for the Yanks.

What’s Next?
The Yankees finish their road trip with a three-game set with the Royals in Kansas City. They take on Jakob Junis tomorrow in a bullpenning day. Chad Green is expected to start for the Yanks, first pitch at 8:15 PM.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
