Yankees offense doesn't show up as they drop two game series in Arizona
The Yankees looked to split the two game series in Arizona following a 3-1 loss on C.C.’s
historic day. Masahiro Tanaka tried to rebound from his last start in Anaheim where he
allowed five earned runs in 5 2/3 innings. He only went four innings today, allowing 3
earned runs and striking out six. The Yankees’ offense was non-existent once again as
they were only able to put up two runs, losing 3-2.
Tanaka got himself into trouble in the bottom of the 2nd inning when he allowed
consecutive hits to Christian Walker, Ketel Marte, and then Nick Ahmed‘s RBI single,
driving in Walker. A wild pitch later in the inning brought in Marte to gave the D-Backs
their 2nd and final run of the inning.
In the bottom of the 4th, Ketel Marte led off the inning with a long home run to extend
the lead to 3-0. This would also make it the 5th straight game that Tanaka has allowed a
home run.
Mike Ford pinch hit for Tanaka in the top of the 5th with two runners on base. Ford
worked a walk, loading the bases for Brett Gardner, who grounded out and left the
runners stranded.
Luis Cessa took over in the 5th inning for Tanaka. He pitched two scoreless innings with
three strikeouts while allowing only one base runner.
Luke Voit extended his on-base streak to 41 consecutive games with a solo home run in
the top of the 6th inning, his 9th of the season. Gleyber Torres‘ double off the center
field wall later in the inning knocked Merrill Kelly out of the game, but that was the
extent of the Yankees’ offense in the inning.
Tommy Kahnle came in relief and pitched a scoreless bottom of the 7th, striking out
one.
Voit led off the top of the 8th with a walk, followed by a Sanchez single. Torres then
grounded into a 5-4-3 double play, moving Voit over to third. Mike Tauchman drove in
Luke Voit with an RBI single, bringing the Yankees within one run.
Adam Ottavino was called on in the 8th to hold Arizona, as he did just that, retiring the
three batters he faced in the inning.
Cameron Maybin walked in the top of the 9th, but would unfortunately be the only
baserunner for the Yankees in the inning, as they were unable to mount the comeback
against Greg Holland.
