Yankees injury updates 5/23/19

The Yankees have officially placed CC Sabathia on the Injured List with inflammation in his right knee.  This is the same knee that Sabathia had surgery on in 2014 and saw IL (then, the DL) time with in 2015, 2017 and 2018.  The Yankees will recall Nestor Cortes to take Sabathia’s spot on the roster.

Sabathia will head to New York to have his knee drained as well as get a cortisone shot and a Synvisc injection.  In his postgame interview last night, Sabathia said he doesn’t expect to miss too much time and that the pain he experienced in his knee last night wasn’t any worse than when he was forced to miss time in previous years.  The hope is he’ll miss only one, maybe two, turns in the rotation.

The good news, however, is that James Paxton is set to return to the rotation this week – possibly as soon as this weekend’s series in Kansas City.  Paxton said he felt “next to nothing” in his knee during his bullpen session this week.

After taking a line drive off his shin during Saturday’s game against the Rays, Masahiro Tanaka has been cleared to play and will start this afternoon in the series finale in Baltimore.

Giancarlo Stanton will have his rehab assignment stalled due to soreness in his knee/calf area after taking a pitch off the area in Monday’s rehab game.  Returning Stanton from his rehab assignment (to the IL) allows the Yankees to reset his rehab timeline.  He will be shut down for a week and then presumably resume his rehab in Tampa.  If all checks out there, he could be promoted to triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre by early June and find his way back to the Bronx soon after.

Zack Britton was unavailable to pitch in last night’s game, with Manager Aaron Boone stating he was “a little beat up”.  Britton has pitched in a team high 22 games already this season, but Boone expects him to be available on Thursday afternoon if needed.
