Is Aaron Boone the AL Manager of the Year to date?

Aaron Boone takes a lot of criticism from fans almost every time the Yankees lose, and even at times after Yankee wins. Many of his decisions are second-guessed and make fans wonder what he is doing, but somehow the Yankees just keep winning games. Coming into 2019, would anyone expect a Yankees team with the ridiculous amount of injuries so far to get off to a 24-16 start and be only half a game out of first in the AL East? I certainly would not have, and throughout this season of injuries, roster moves, and lineup changes at least one thing has stayed constant: Aaron Boone.

In a clubhouse that has been decimated by injuries Gio Urshela and Domingo Germán have been some of the most valuable players for the Yankees in 2019. Thairo Estrada, Mike Tauchman, and many others have stepped up in big moments. Boone has kept the expectations and culture inside of the clubhouse the exact same as when the stars were there, which allows the “next man up” to continue to be successful.

Other Options:

Kevin Cash, Tampa Bay Rays: After surprising a lot of people by winning 90 games in 2018, the Rays have gotten off to another good start in 2019. Their 24-15 record has them in first place in the AL East. Cash deserves a lot of credit for their success beginning with the use of an opener.

Rocco Baldelli, Minnesota Twins: In his first year managing the Twins Baldelli has his team in first place in the AL Central at 25-15. The Twins made a couple of big signings this offseason including Marwin Gonzalez and Nelson Cruz, but lost Joe Mauer to retirement. If the Twins continue to win at this pace it will be one of the biggest turnarounds in the American League after they won just 78 games in 2018.

A.J. Hinch, Houston Astros: At 27-15, Hinch and the Astros have the best record in the Majors at this point. They also have one of the most talented rosters in baseball, which in no way is a bad thing, but certainly takes away from Hinch’s claim to be Manager of the Year.

Each of these options could make a solid case to be the AL Manager of the Year, but if the season ended today, I believe the award would go to Aaron Boone. His team has faced by far more controversy than any other. This version of the Yankees has been more than just competitive while awaiting reinforcements, it has actually found a way to thrive going 18-7 in the last 25 games. So even if fans don’t like the lineup he puts out every day or the way he uses the bullpen, Boone has the Yanks playing well and winning games with whatever players he is given, and that is all you could ask for in a manager.
