Power Outage Can't Stop Yankees' Offense Against the Rays

Coming into this final game of the three-game set, both teams had won one game with the Yankees winning game one in a one run contest and the Rays winning the second game in blowout fashion. With the Yankees looking to catch up to the Rays in the standings, this game was a crucial one for this rolling Yankees team.

Masahiro Tanaka started for the Yankees and provided them with a solid outing, pitching seven innings while striking out seven and giving up just one run due to a solo homerun from Austin Meadows. Blake Snell was the Rays’ starter today and he managed to send down the first nine Yankees in order, striking out twelve over his 5.2 inning outing. In this time, he also allowed two runs which came as a result of a fifth inning rally with two outs that featured a Mike Tauchman double and a D.J. LeMahieu single which each scored one.

The score stayed 2-1 until the top of the eighth when Luke Voit scored on a wild pitch which was upheld by replay. Following this inning, a forty-three-minute power outage at Tropicana field delayed the ninth inning. Coming out of this delay, the Yankees offense exploded and scored four runs in the top of the ninth. These runs came due to a Thairo Estrada solo homerun, a Gio Urshela double which scored Austin Romine and Mike Tauchman, and a Brett Gardner sacrifice fly scored Luke Voit. In the bottom of this inning, Chad Green came in to close out the game and struck out the side to give the Yankees the 7-1 win over the Rays.

Following this victory, the Yankees are half a game behind the Rays in the division standings and the Yankees move to 24-16 on the season.
