Yanks win 8th straight series with 7-0 win over Padres

The Yankees came into Wednesday’s rubber match against the Padres looking for a win with James Paxton making his return from the Injured List. The Bombers’ bats came alive with seven runs on ten hits, and five shutout innings from the bullpen helped defeat the Padres 7-0 for the series win.

The Yankees immediately came out swinging in the bottom of the 1st, with DJ LeMahieu and Luke Voit hitting back-to-back home runs to give the Yanks an early two run lead.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning Gio Urshela continued his hot hitting when he lined a solo home run into the left field seats, his third of the season.

James Paxton looked sharp in his return from the IL, pitching four innings, while striking out seven and not allowing a hit.

LeMahieu led off the bottom of the 5th with a walk, followed by Voit reaching base on a fielder’s choice. A Gleyber Torres single later in the inning loaded the bases, leading to Brett Gardner’s sac fly, extending the Yankees lead to 4-0.

Former Yankee Adam Warren relieved Padres’ starter Chris Paddack in the bottom of the 6th inning. Paddack pitched five innings, allowing four runs and six hits, which is the most hits and runs he has given up all season.

Cameron Maybin singled in the bottom of the 6th, and after stealing both second and third base, scoring on the throwing error by Padres’ catcher Austin Hedges, giving the Yankees a 5-0 lead.

Luke Voit led off the bottom of the 7th inning with a line drive to center field, which got past a diving Manuel Margot, allowing Voit to leg out a triple. Two batters later, Torres drove a two-run home run into the left field seats, his 14th of the season, making it a 7-0 game.

The Yankees bullpen following Paxton was lights out, completely shutting down the Padres offense. Green and Ottavino pitched the 5th and 6th, respectively, with Holder pitching the 7th and 8th. They combined for four innings, only allowing two hits and striking out three.

Nestor Cortes Jr. worked himself into a jam in the top of the 9th, loading the bases with no outs. However, Cortes got Padres’ third baseman Ty France to ground into a 1-2-3 double play, followed by an Ian Kinsler lineout to short to end the game.

What’s next?
The Yankees begin their three game series against the Boston Red Sox tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium at 7:05 PM. J.A. Happ will take the mound for the Yankees as Chris Sale will pitch for Boston.
