Comeback bid falls short, Yankees lose 5-4

The Yankees entered Tuesday night’s game looking to clinch another series win behind Masahiro Tanaka but could not overcome a bad start despite a late push.  

Tanaka and the Yankees got off to a horrible start, as Manny Machado singled home Greg Garcia to make the game 1-0 before Eric Hosmer hit a three-run home run to extend the lead to 4-0 before Tanaka got his first out.

New York chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the fourth, when a solo home run by Gary Sanchez cut the deficit to three.

Tanaka was able to get through six innings, allowing just one more run in the sixth that made the score 5-1. At the very least, Tanaka provided some length to give the Yankees a chance. New York loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, and DJ LeMahieu came through with a two-run single to cut San Diego’s lead to 5-3. After an infield single by Voit, Aaron Hicks grounded into a fielder’s choice which scored Gardner and cut New York’s deficit to just one run in the seventh.

In the top of the eighth, the Padres loaded the bases with one out, but Joe Harvey was able to get a strikeout before Luis Cessa came in to finish the inning and keep the Yanks within one. The Yankees went down quietly in the bottom of the eighth, but Cessa was able to keep the score at 5-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth.  Gio Urshela started the inning with a single, but a double play ended the game, leaving the Yankees rally a little bit short.

What’s Next?  
The Yankees and Padres finish their three-game set tomorrow at 1:05 PM. Chris Paddack will pitch for the Padres and James Paxton will return from the IL to take the ball for the Yankees.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
