Series Preview: Baltimore Orioles vs New York Yankees (5/13-5/16)
After a quick trip down to Tampa which saw the Yankees take a three-game series from the Rays 2-1, they return to the Bronx for three games against the Baltimore Orioles. After struggling against Seattle and righting the ship a bit in Tampa, the Bombers find themselves at 24-16 on the year and only a half game out of first place.
This will be a six-game homestand for New York with three against Baltimore and three against Tampa. Baltimore is 3-7 in their last 10 and, as predicted, find themselves at or near the bottom of most major offensive and pitching categories. Oriole pitching has given up the most runs and homers in the majors and has the second least number of strikeouts. On the other side of the ball, they are well below average in runs per game, walks, and team on-base percentage.
Game One-Monday, May 13, 6:35pm EST
David Hess (1.4, 5.50 ERA) vs Jonathan Loaisiga (1-1, 4.50 ERA)
With James Paxton’s knee soreness still holding him out, the Yankees turn to Jonathan Loaisiga once again. The young righty was roughed up against Seattle in his last start, giving up four runs on six hits in just four innings. The Yankees will hope that Loaisiga bounces back and gives them a good start to open the series.

The Orioles will send out David Hess, whose has struggled with the long ball. Hess has already given up 10 home runs this season, which is nearly half of the total he allowed all last year. In his last start against Boston, he gave up three runs on three hits in four innings pitched. Hess has not been pitching well as of late, he’s 0-4 since April 1st with a 7.27 ERA.
Game Two-Tuesday, May 14, 6:35pm EST
Andrew Cashner (4-1. 4.25 ERA) vs JA Happ (2-3, 4.36 ERA)
Happ has struggled at times for the Yankees, but tossed a gem last time out against Seattle, no-hitting the Mariners through five innings. He has struggled at home this season as he has posted a 6.12 ERA there in five starts. He will look to reverse this trend on Tuesday.

Baltimore counters with Andrew Cashner, who is the only O’s pitcher with three separate starts of six innings or more. In his last start he held the potent Red Sox offense to just one run over six innings. In his last time out against the Yankees, however, he wasn’t quite as good, giving up six earned runs through just four innings. In his last five starts against the Bombers, he’s 1-3 with a 5.52 ERA.
Game Three-Wednesday, May 15, 6:35pm EST
Domingo German (7-1, 2.70 ERA) vs Dan Straily (1-3, 8.23 ERA)
German has been one of the revelations not only for the Yankees, but in all of baseball. He’s been utterly brilliant thus far and has picked up wins in each of his last four starts, the last one coming against Tampa Bay after allowing only three runs in five innings. In his last appearance against the Orioles, he gave up two runs through six innings, and secured the win.

Straily has had a rough go of it since joining Baltimore. In his last start against the Angels, he lasted only four and a third innings while giving up six runs. His first start ever in an Orioles uniform came against the Yankees, who welcomed him with a five-run barrage in just one and a third innings. Straily hasn’t won a decision in about a month, he’s winless in four starts since limiting the Red Sox to one run in five innings back on April 15th.
