CC Records 3,000th Strikeout in Yankees' 3-1 Loss to Diamondbacks

Carsten Charles Sabathia became just the 17th pitcher, and third lefty, in MLB history to record 3,000 career strikeouts in the Yankees' 3-1 defeat to the Diamondbacks on Tuesday evening.  The Big Man accomplished the feat in the second inning after striking out David Peralta, Christian Walker, and finally John Ryan Murphy for strikeout #3,000.  Sabathia finished with a final line of 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs, and striking out five.  He was outdueled by Zack Greinke though, who dominated the Yankees lineup for 7.2 innings and allowed only one run.

The first run of the game came in the bottom of the second inning as the result of a Wilmer Flores solo home run. 

The Yankees tied the score up in the top of the fourth inning after two doubles by Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres.  The D-Backs retaliated in the bottom of the inning following a leadoff double from Eduardo Escobar who later came around to score on an RBI single from Wilmer Flores to take a 2-1 lead.

CC got himself into some trouble following a leadoff double once again by Escobar, and a walk to Walker, which ended his milestone night after 5.1 innings.  Jonathan Holder came in to finish the inning and, after a walk to Flores to load the bases, got Nick Ahmed to ground into a 1-2-3 double play to end the inning. 

The Diamondbacks extended their lead when David Peralta hit a sacrifice fly off of Zack Britton to score Ketel Marte, finishing the scoring at 3-1. 

 Greinke was on all night and the combination of Andrew Chafin and Greg Holland accounted for the final four outs to close out the ballgame.  The New York offense was only able to muster five hits all game.

What’s Next?

The Yankees look to split their two-game series with the D-Backs tomorrow afternoon as Masahiro Tanaka leads the Yanks against Merrill Kelly. First pitch is at 3:40 PM.  The Yankees will return home after the game to open up a seven game homestand.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
