Opinion: The 2017 Yankees, and Joe Girardi, were robbed

Image
In the professional sports world, it's a known fact that cheating has occurred across all leagues, in all sports, for as long as professional sports have existed. That's not to say that news of the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal was any less upsetting. While the Yankees weren't the only team to be seemingly robbed of a championship title as a result, news like this piece of news hurts more when it's your team who's victimized by said cheating. Yankees sweep Twins, advance to ALCS

Image
It is officially acceptable to say “next team up” as the Yankees have swept the Minnesota Twins and will be moving on to face the winner of the Astros and Rays in the 2019 ALCS. Despite only being two games better than the Twins in the regular season and losing their home run record to the AL Central champs, the Yankees absolutely dominated the Twins in this series. With this series now concluded, the Yankees have won 13 straight playoff games against the Twins. This series also resulted in the Yankees having the second-best run differential in a three-game playoff series ever at a mark of +16. Photo Credit: Twitter

Previewing the final week of the 2019 Regular Season

Image
Heading into their final five regular season games of the 2019 season, the Yankees have wrapped up most of their business, with just a few loose ends left over.   The Yankees just concluded their final regular season homestand this past week, taking two of three from both the Angels and Blue Jays, wrapping up their first AL East crown in seven years in the process.   The final homestand saw the Yankees hit the 100-win mark for the second consecutive season, the return of Luis Severino (who dominated in his two appearances) and Giancarlo Stanton, as well as the final regular season start for future Hall of Famer Carsten Charles Sabathia.   CC was honored with an emotional ceremony on Sunday afternoon, his last ever regular season game at Yankee Stadium.

Umpires are becoming increasingly soft, evidenced by Brett Gardner's bat banging ejection

I don’t think I’m alone in my opinion that Brett Gardner banging his bat on dugout roofs (both at the Rogers Centre in Toronto and at Yankee Stadium alike) in protest of bad umpiring, is a display that is nothing short of iconic.   Photo Credit: New York Post

Series Preview: Yankees at Red Sox (7/25-7/28)

Image
For the first time all season, the Yankees are headed to Fenway Park. This weekend’s four-game series presents an opportunity for the Yankees to put the final nail in the American League East coffin of their long-time rival. Entering play on Thursday 12 games up on the Red Sox in the division, a series win, or possibly even a split, would make it next to impossible for the Red Sox to make a run at the AL East over the season’s final two months. New York comes into the series at 66-35, which is the best record in Major League Baseball. Photo Credit: Billie Weiss/Getty Images

Yankees week in review (7/15-7/21): The "savage" Yankees win series against Rays and Rockies in New York

Image
This week, the New York Yankees faced off against the Rays and Rockies at Yankee Stadium in the blistering summer heat. After losing the first game to Tampa, the Bombers rebounded and won five out of their next six games. Series Preview: Yankees @ Rays (7/4-7/7)

Heading into Wednesday, the Yanks owned a 5.5 game lead on the Rays atop the AL East. The Rays currently have home-field advantage in the AL Wild Card game, sitting at 50-36. Series Preview: Toronto Blue Jays vs. New York Yankees (6/24-6/26)

Image
The Yankees are rolling, having won eight of their last nine games as they welcome the Toronto Blue Jays to the Bronx for a quick three-game series. The Yanks are 1-2 so far against the Jays, having last played them in early June. It’s worth noting, however, that this is a very different Yankees team than the one that started out this month.    Toronto comes in struggling, as they come in at 8-13 in the month of June and are currently a whopping 20.5 games back of first place in the American League East. However, they did just take two out of three from the Boston Red Sox, which gives them a bit of momentum heading into this series. They are a slightly better team on the road than at home, with a .385 winning percentage in away games as compared to .342 at the Rogers Centre. Hitting has been an issue for Toronto, as they are well below league average in most major hitting categories and dead-last in team batting average. Pitching has also not been a strong suit, as they...

CC notches 250th career win as Yanks complete sweep of Rays

Image
The Yankees 12-1 victory completed the series sweep of the Rays behind an offensive explosion and excellent start from CC Sabathia, who added another milestone to his historic career with his 250th career win. Sabathia is now the 14th pitcher in Major League history to reach 250 wins and 3,000 strikeouts, well on his way to Cooperstown.   Photo Credit: NJ.com

Series Preview: New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox (5/30-6/2)

Image
The Rivalry is back on in the Bronx, as the Red Sox come to town to take on the Yankees in a four-game set. The Bombers shut down the San Diego Padres Wednesday en route to their eighth consecutive series win, and they’ll look to ride that momentum into a very important series this weekend. While the Rays enter the day just a game out of first place in the AL East, they have a three-game set with the MLB-best Minnesota Twins on tap - it’s crucial the Yanks put away the Sox and begin to pull away from a surging Tampa team. The defending champions have not had it easy to start the year. They enter play just a game over .500, already 7.5 games back in the division race. Last month the Yankees swept a quick two-game set against the Sox - if the bats can take advantage of an unstable pitching staff (16th ranked 4.43 team ERA), they shouldn’t have an issue putting away their bitter rivals yet again. Who stays, who goes as Yankees continue to get healthy

Image
The New York Yankees currently own a 35-19 record and a one game lead in the battle for first place in the American League East on May 29. They have been able to achieve this success all with Aaron Judge, Didi Gregorius, Giancarlo Stanton, Luis Severino, and  Dellin Betances combining to play in only 23 games.   Photo Credit: NY Post

Injury Notes: Didi, Judge, Betances, Sevy, CC

Remember when it seemed like someone was sustaining some sort of injury every night, and we could slowly and painfully feel our souls leaving our bodies as a result? Well, those days are over. With the activation of James Paxton this morning, the Yankees are slowly getting healthier. There has also been good news released about numerous other injured Yankees as well, so let’s dive right in. Chris O'Meara / AP

Series Preview: New York Yankees vs. Kansas City Royals (5/24 - 5/26)

Image
Heading into a three-game Memorial Day Weekend series against the Kansas City Royals, the Yankees are in first place in the A.L. East.  They are two and a half games ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays.   They have won six of their last seven games.  They swept the Baltimore Orioles in a four-game set, winning the last of the four games on a run driven in by an Aaron Hicks walk.  Players, the next of which will be James Paxton, are returning from the Injured List.   Not to put too fine a point on their situation, but, they are currently a pleasure to watch.

Yankees injury updates 5/23/19

Image
The Yankees have officially placed CC Sabathia on the Injured List with inflammation in his right knee.   This is the same knee that Sabathia had surgery on in 2014 and saw IL (then, the DL) time with in 2015, 2017 and 2018.   The Yankees will recall Nestor Cortes to take Sabathia’s spot on the roster. Sanchez and Torres keep on rolling as Yanks take down Orioles 7-5

Image
The Yankees made it four wins in a row, and eight in their last nine contests, with a 7-5 victory over the Orioles in Baltimore. The Yanks have scored 41 runs in their last four games and are very clearly playing their best offensive baseball of the season right now. With the win, New York improves to 31-17 and maintains its two game advantage over the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. Photo Credit: Nick Wass/AP Photo

Series Preview: New York Yankees vs. Baltimore Orioles (5/20 - 5/23)

Image
The Baltimore Orioles have, so far this season, proven an easy opponent -- as well they should be.  Of course, going into the season as the 2019 Yankees' first opponent of the year, the talk across the world of sports news was that the Orioles were in possession of one of the worst teams in MLB.  With a record of 15-31, and after dropping their most recent game 10-0 to the Cleveland Indians, they're certainly proving it.  While it's been an awfully convenient set of circumstances that has led the Yankees to easy teams in the midst of their unprecedented injury woes, the Orioles are beyond just an easy team.  They're terrible -- and even the "replacement" Yankees (who are proving to be quite the surprise force) have no excuse for losing.  In looking at the pitching matchups, there's only further evidence to the point that the Yankees should breeze through this series.  They've managed to make it to first place in the A.L. East foll...

Urshela walk-off puts Yankees atop AL East

Image
The Yankees enter the weekend after an off day against the leaders of the AL East, the Tampa Bay Rays.   CC Sabathia took the mound against the Rays’ opener, Ryne Stanek.  Sabathia  pitched a gem, only giving up six hits and one run through six innings.   The Yankees found themselves down in the bottom of the ninth by two runs, but clutch hitting from Luke Voit, Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres, and Gio Urshela saved the game.   The Bombers won a thriller, 4-3 over the Rays. No need to panic: The Yankees rotation does not need a marquee upgrade

Image
Remain calm. Everything is going to be okay. Well, at least I think they will. The Yankees have undergone an almost comical string of injuries to key players in 2019 and yet have still managed to play at such a competitive level that they find themselves just one-half game back of the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.   And yet, all I see on fellow blogs, the New York tabloids and Twitter is that this team is a mess and is in urgent need of a top-shelf starting pitcher in order for them to remain in the race over the course of the 2019 season. Photo Credit: Julio Aguilar/Getty Images Let me make this unequivocally clear: such takes are nothing but stark overreactions.
