Yankees re-sign Brett Gardner to 1-year deal with option for 2021

It’s official: Yankee veteran Brett Gardner will remain in the Bronx in 2020.

First reported on Twitter by New York Post’s George A. King III, Gardy has resigned with New York for $12.5 million guaranteed, which includes a $2.5 million buyout on his option for 2021 for $10 million.  He will receive a $8 million salary during the 2020 season, with a $2 million signing bonus.  The salary agreement comes after Gardy made $7.5 million in the 2019 season.


While there wasn't much doubt that Gardner would return to New York after a career year in 2019, his free agency at least opened the door to him moving on and signing elsewhere.  Gardner, however, always stated he wanted to finish his career with the Yankees.  With CC Sabathia’s departure after the 2019 season, Gardy is the only carry-over from the 2009 World Series champion team and the lone veteran presence on the roster who has been with the longer than five seasons.  He recorded his best career season in 2019, hitting .251 with 28 home runs and 74 RBIs.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
