Injury Notes: Didi, Judge, Betances, Sevy, CC
Remember
when it seemed like someone was sustaining some sort of injury every night, and
we could slowly and painfully feel our souls leaving our bodies as a result?
Well, those days are over. With the activation of James Paxton this morning,
the Yankees are slowly getting healthier. There has also been good news
released about numerous other injured Yankees as well, so let’s dive right in.
Quite
possibly the most exciting news regards Didi Gregorius. Didi joined the
Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on a rehab assignment on May 28, and
RailRiders manager Jay Bell had some incredibly encouraging words about Didi.
Check the tweet below:
Jay Bell says Didi Gregorius will be here for six days. Play 7 innings at short today, DH tomorrow and play nine innings at short on Thursday. #Yankees— DJ Eberle (@ByDJEberle) May 28, 2019
Judging
by this, it sounds like we could see Didi’s return to the Bronx as early as
next week, specifically on Tuesday, June 4 against the Blue Jays. As long as
everything goes smoothly, it won’t be long before Sir Didi is bat flipping his
way back into the hearts of Yankees fans.

Judge’s recovery also received a very promising update, as the slugger was able
to hit off a tee for the first time since suffering an oblique strain on April
20. According to Aaron Boone, Judge has not been having any issues with his oblique,
and has also been able to throw and run, as many fans already know. Boone later
said that he feels that Judge is “at a pretty good place right now as he really
starts to ramp up baseball activities.”
Boone
also reported that Yankees ace Luis Severino will start throwing very soon, possibly
as early as this week. Severino has missed the entire season to date with a
Grade 2 lat strain and rotator cuff inflammation, neither of which are easy to
recover from. Sevy reported that he has not felt any pain in his shoulder in
about three weeks and should be able to begin to ramp up his recovery as a
result. No timeline has been officially discussed on when Severino will return,
but he said that he is optimistic that he will be able to take the mound for
the Yankees in the second half of the season.
Dellin
Betances’s rehab has begun to intensify as well, as the Yankees’ bullpen ace
began a throwing program from a mound a few days ago. Specifically, he threw 25
fastballs prior to the Yankees’ win over the Padres on Memorial Day. Boone
reported that everything went well, and that as long as Betances continues to
progress, he should be able to return at some point in June.
Lastly,
Aaron Boone expects CC Sabathia to be available to pitch this coming Sunday
against the Red Sox. CC has been sidelined since May 23 with right knee
inflammation, but the injury was not serious and CC only will miss one start as
a result. Barring any other updates, activating Sabathia from the Injured List
this coming Sunday is “the plan right now,” according to Boone.
As
for other injured Yankees, there haven’t been too many updates. Troy Tulowitzki
has been working out at second and third base, but does not have a timetable or
a scheduled rehab assignment. Giancarlo Stanton, Greg Bird, and Jacoby Ellsbury
have also not received any updates either. However, Jordan Montgomery still
hopes to be able to return to the Yankees rotation at some point in August.
