Yankees strike early and cruise to a win over Mariners
After banking a nice, weekend series win against the
Minnesota Twins, the Yankees looked to continue their winning ways against longtime
nemesis Felix Hernandez. While Felix has dominated the Yankees countless times over
the years, the story was quite different in this one. With more healthy
reinforcements arriving in the form of Clint Frazier, the Yankees wasted no
time jumping on King Felix en route to a 7 – 3 win

The Yankees got on the board quickly in the first inning,
where a leadoff double by DJ LeMahieu was immediately followed by a towering
Luke Voit home run. The 2 – 0 lead did not last long however, because the
Yankees tacked on more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Brett Gardner
led off the frame with a solo home run. An error allowed Gio Urshela to reach
and that was immediately followed by the first career home run for Thairo Estrada.
A Mike Tauchman double and a DJ LeMahieu RBI single capped the frame and gave
the Yankees a 6 – 0 lead after two.
In the third, Gardy lined a two-out triple to right field and
was later brought home by Gio Urshela for the Yankees’ seventh run. Their total
would settle there for the rest of the night, but it was nice to see a good number on the board and the lineup getting healthier will hopefully make this a more
regular occurrence.
Holder has been pretty good of late, but he didn’t quite have
it tonight and after loading the bases with one out, Adam Ottavino was called
upon to escape the inning unscathed. Ottavino and Zack Britton combined to lock
down the seventh and eighth innings before Luis Cessa finished it off in the
ninth to secure the win for the Yankees.
What's Next?
The Yankees and Mariners will face off on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. The game will be on the YES Network at 6:35 and the probable starters are Masahiro Tanaka and Marco Gonzales.
