BREAKING: Yankees and Aaron Judge agree to terms

Image
After an incredibly nerve-wracking few weeks (six months) the Yankees and Aaron Judge have agreed to terms on a contract to keep the big man in pinstripes. The deal was broken by Ken Rosenthal and Jon Morosi Wednesday morning and the reported terms of the deal are nine years and a whopping $360 million. The eyes of the baseball world have been on Judge this offseason as he was the premier free agent in this year’s market. The Yankees obviously wanted to keep their homegrown star but there were not too many hard reports and facts about Judge’s movements and desires as the offseason wore on. In the face of fierce competition, the Yankees got their man and now the conversation will begin as to when he is made the next captain of the Yankees, something that has been widely assumed but that Ken Rosenthal reported is expected in his article for The Athletic Wednesday morning. BBB Reactions to the humiliating ALCS loss to the Astros

Image
The Yankees will be watching the World Series from their couches for the 13th consecutive season, Aaron Judge is a free agent with no guarantee of his return, the Yankees are the laughingstock of the league this week after playing an embarrassing 2004 Red Sox ALCS comeback montage as motivation from their own 3-0 ALCS deficit.  Oh yeah, and did we mention we lost to Houston AGAIN?  Things are very-bad, no-good in Yankeeland right now as we embark on another offseason of frustrations and questions about where things went so wrong.  The writers of the BBB each weigh in on the state of the team and the franchise as a whole. Hello darkness, our old friend. Another failed postseason. Another infuriating defeat at the hands of the Houston Astros. Another offseason of questions that lies ahead .  In our first of a few 2022 recap pieces, the boys of the Bronx Bomber Babble Podcast break down a few burning questions for this team as we head into the offseason and look ahead at the state of the franchise that has lost their way and still hasn’t been able to solve the October riddle.   Photo Credit: MLB.com

ALCS Update after Game One: We still hate Aaron Boone

Image
The Yankees dropped Game One of the 2022 American League Championship Series last night in predictable fashion - an offensive no show at the mercy of Justin Verlander, but more frustratingly, because of the bullpen mismanagement of manager Aaron Boone.  Thoughts below from some of our writers as we react to the moves Boone made not just last night, but throughout his Yankees tenure. 2022 ALCS Preview: Yankees vs Astros Round 3

Image
It’s the matchup we’ve been waiting for, the matchup we’ve been anticipating all year long. The 3 rd  entry into a so far closely contested but one-sided playoff rivalry. Its Yankees – Astros Part 3 in the 2022 ALCS. The Astros posted the best record in the AL this season and swept through their ALDS series against the Seattle Mariners. The Yankees struggled through much of the second half of their season, squandering their chance at home field advantage in the process, and were pushed to the brink in their ALDS series against the Cleveland Guardians. In spite of the trials they’ve endured so far, the Yankees have made it to where they wanted to be, with a chance to avenge their previous losses and get over the mountain they have not yet been able to scale. The Yankees take the field tonight in game 1, with a chance to beat the Houston Astros and advance to their first World Series since 2009. The Astros will likely be regarded as a comfortable favorite heading into the series, let...

BREAKING: Yankees land Montas, bolster their bullpen in pair of deals

In the leadup to an otherwise very boring trade deadline (so far), the speculation around Yankee land was where would the help come from. After seeing their top target Luis Castillo head to the Mariners for a steep price, the Yankees needed to shift. They have been in rumors for weeks about seeing help for their starting rotation as well as their bullpen. After weeks of nothing but rumors, the Yankees finally struck Tuesday, agreeing to a deal for Oakland A’s ace Frankie Montas. Also included in the deal is A’s reliever Lou Trivino. The return for Montas and Trivino is not insignificant, the Yankees sent back LHP JP Sears, INF Cooper Bowman, RHP Luis Medina and LHP Ken Waldichuk. Waldichuk would seem to be the headliner in the deal for the A’s, as he’s been a rising star and strikeout machine in the Yankees minor league system; Medina has flashed great potential and has decently high upside as well. The Yankees paying a price like this in a deadline deal represents a change from rece...

4/8-4/10 Season/Series Preview: Red Sox @ Yankees

Image
With mere hours to go before the Yankees kick off their 2022 campaign, we’ve reached the point that even a few weeks ago we thought may never come. We finally get to witness Yankee baseball today! An added bonus on top of that is that today’s season opener comes against the rival Boston Red Sox, the team that booted the Yankees out of last season’s playoffs. The Yankees’ season begins with a tough 10 game stretch against division opponents and this season opening series against the Red Sox at home provides the Yankees with a golden opportunity to make a statement and get off to a great start. The team has come under scrutiny for their approach to free agency and team building this offseason. In spite of all that noise, the team performed well this spring and now stands ready to take the field in the Bronx. Lets take a look at some matchups. NY Charles Wenzelberg Friday 4/8. 1:05pm EST: Gerrit Cole vs Nathan Eovaldi   The Yankees will step into the batters box on Friday again...

BBB Reacts to Yankees early October exit and the renewal of Aaron Boone's contract

Image
The New York Yankees entered the 2021 season as World Series favorites but struggled through mediocrity and general malaise over the course of the entire season before fizzling out well short of their goal in the American League Wild Card Game at the hands of hated rivals Boston Red Sox.  Two weeks after their playoff elimination, it was announced Manager Aaron Boone's contract would be renewed for three more seasons with a fourth-year option.  Writers of the BBB weigh in on both below:   Photo Credit: Charles Wenzelberg/New York Post

Series Preview: NYY @ OAK 8/26-8/29

Image
The Yankees are heading to the west coast, and they head off on this seven-game west coast swing as the hottest team in baseball. They are the owners of an 11-game winning streak and have won their last 10 consecutive series. It has been a remarkable turnaround for a team that looked like it was asleep for the first half of this season, but there is still work to be done. The Yankees current 11 game winning streak is their longest since 1985 and it has seen them go from trailing both the Red Sox and the Oakland A’s in the Wild Card standings, to leading both by four and five games respectively in the loss column. The Yankees flipped a switch in mid-July and now have ridden an impressive white hot winning streak into the driver’s seat for a playoff stretch as we head to the stretch run of the regular season. The first series up in this all-important stretch run, is the aforementioned Oakland A’s. The A’s are a talented team that had an impressive 13 game winning streak of their ow...

Kluber and Taillon are showing what's possible for this Yankee rotation

Image
We are now firmly underway with this 2021 MLB season. At 34 games in, we are a little bit past “it’s still early” territory and at this point we can start to discuss some of what we’ve seen with a more meaningful sample size behind it. The Yankees did not get out of the gates strongly this season and while they have played better and strung together wins the past few weeks, their performances have been uneven. While several key names are still worth being concerned about offensively, the Yankees have managed to not lose a series since the Tampa Bay series from April 16th-18th. The obvious strengths of the team to this point of the season have been 1) Gerrit Cole, 2) The bullpen and 3) The recent white hot hitting streak of Giancarlo Stanton. While the Yankees starting rotation and offense had both been inconsistent to start the season, it is the rotation that is leading this Yankees charge back into solid baseball and series wins. Specifically, it is the stabilization of Corey Kl...

Series Preview: NYY @ Rays 4/9 - 4/11

Image
We are approaching the end of our first full week of the 2021 season now as the Yankees have completed two series against the Jays and Orioles. While the results have been mixed and at times very frustrating to watch, the Yankees are sitting at 3-3. They now head to Tampa, to face the team that eliminated them from last year’s playoffs. The Rays are coming off of six straight games on the road to open the season and just finished getting swept by the Red Sox in three fairly non competitive games earlier this week. A strong weekend could vault the Yankees into first place in the early goings of the season, lets take a look at the matchup. Credit: ESPN

Series Preview: NYY vs. Bal 4/5-4/7

Image
Well that stunk. The Yankees got their season underway with a series loss against the Blue Jays this weekend. While their pitching was very solid and left reasons for optimism, it was a very frustrating weekend of hitting to watch. For most of the weekend, the Yankees had a lot of traffic on the bases, but were not able to cash in time and time again. The hits and the RBIs will eventually come but until then, lets look at what the Yankees have coming up. Credit: ESPN.com

Position Preview: Outfield

Image
It’s been a long winter but opening day is approaching fast. We are most of the way through spring training at this point and because of that, we’re getting to the point where we can probably make some solid predictions about roster decisions that will be made soon. While the Yankees outfield on paper seems pretty set, this is a group that has not been easy to predict the last few seasons. Injuries have played a big role in determining playing time with this group and while that will remain a concern until it is proven to not be an issue anymore, there is real reason for optimism heading into this season. Let's take a look at how the Yankees might line up their outfielders this season.   Credit: Newsday/J. Conrad Wiliiams Jr.

Luis Severino shut down with forearm discomfort

Image
The Yankees announced on Thursday that RHP Luis Severino would be shut down for "a few days" after he experienced discomfort in his forearm Wednesday night and again Thursday morning. Severino was scheduled to throw a bullpen on Thursday.  According to Aaron Boone, Severino has a "loose body" in his arm and this has been an on again off again issue for Severino dating back to his last start of the ALCS against Houston in October.  Per Sweeny Murti, Severino had MRIs in both December and February that came back clean.  It was initially reported that Severino would see Dr Christopher Ahmad on Friday and Jack Curry later clarified that Severino has been prescribed anti-inflammatories and rest but its is unclear when or if Severino will see Dr Ahmad.

DJ LeMahieu is open to extension talks

Image
Coming off of an MVP caliber first season with the Yankees, DJ LeMahieu spoke to the media for the first time this spring and addressed a number of topics. Normally a man of few words, LeMahieu expressed his opinion on the Astros cheating scandal and how he rated his first season in pinstripes. Yankee fans weren't sure what to expect from DJ heading into last season, the first of a two year $24 million deal, but he quickly impressed the fans with his play and calm demeanor and earned the nickname "The Machine". BBB Writers' offseason thoughts and season review

Image
With the Yankees' season nearly a month over, the dust has finally settled and the offseason is in full swing. The Yankees had strong aspirations for the third consecutive year and came up short of their goal for the third straight year. With this being said, there is a lot to discuss and speculate, and here are a handful of our writers' takes on what happened in 2019 and what may go down in the 2019-2020 offseason as the Yankees strive to finally get back to the Fall Classic for the first time since 2009.  Photo Credit: NY Post
