DJ LeMahieu is open to extension talks

Coming off of an MVP caliber first season with the Yankees, DJ LeMahieu spoke to the media for the first time this spring and addressed a number of topics. Normally a man of few words, LeMahieu expressed his opinion on the Astros cheating scandal and how he rated his first season in pinstripes. Yankee fans weren't sure what to expect from DJ heading into last season, the first of a two year $24 million deal, but he quickly impressed the fans with his play and calm demeanor and earned the nickname "The Machine".

Now heading into his second and final year of his contract, DJ is interested in sticking around the Bronx long term. While there haven't been any contract discussions thus far, DJ said he'd be open to talking about an extension with the team. LeMahieu has been a tremendously valuable signing, providing gold glove caliber defense at multiple positions last season while slashing .327/.375/.518. At just $12 million, he is an insane bargain and will almost certainly not come that cheap on his next deal.

It is unclear how long or how much LeMahieu may be seeking but he expressed his fondness for playing in New York saying "I love it here" and the Yankees have a potentially significant amount of money coming off of their books heading into next offseason. The Yankees and LeMahieu were able to come to an agreement last year without an obvious role in place for him. With Didi Gregorius now departed and Gleyber Torres taking over at shortstop, there will be a spot available and the team will have money to spend if they decide to make a new deal for DJ a priority. The Yankees haven't given out extensions during the season, but they did reach deals with Aaron Hicks and Luis Severino last spring so a deal before the season is still possible. It might be the smart thing to do, if DJ puts up another MVP caliber season he will have many suitors and his price will likely go up.
