Luis Severino shut down with forearm discomfort
The Yankees announced on Thursday
that RHP Luis Severino would be shut down for "a few days" after he
experienced discomfort in his forearm Wednesday night and again Thursday
morning. Severino was scheduled to throw a bullpen on Thursday. According to
Aaron Boone, Severino has a "loose body" in his arm and this has been
an on again off again issue for Severino dating back to his last start of the
ALCS against Houston in October. Per Sweeny Murti, Severino had MRIs in both
December and February that came back clean. It was initially reported that
Severino would see Dr Christopher Ahmad on Friday and Jack Curry later
clarified that Severino has been prescribed anti-inflammatories and rest but
its is unclear when or if Severino will see Dr Ahmad.
Luis Severino’s shoulder issue began when he threw a slider in the bullpen before his start. Now he’s only been throwing fastballs and sliders because the changeup is giving him forearm discomfort.— Lindsey Adler (@lindseyadler) February 20, 2020
Boone punted on the question when
asked if Severino will be ready for opening day. After missing most of last
season with rotator cuff and lat injuries, the Yankees focus will surely be on
his health rather than having him ready for the start of the season. With
opening day a little over a month away, Severino would likely be a long shot to
be ready even if he's deemed healthy within the next few days.
After returning from his injuries
in 2019, Severino pitched in just 12 innings in the regular season, going 1-1
with a 1.50 ERA. He pitched 8.1 innings in the 2019 postseason, going 0-1 in 2
starts and posting a 2.16 ERA. Severino received this tough news on his 26th
birthday and on the heels of the James Paxton news from last week, the Yankees
now face entering the season without two of their top three starters. The pressure
will be on JA Happ and the other pitchers competing for a roster spot to step
up and fill the void in their absence.
