Late-inning heroics rescue bullpen as Yanks top Royals 7-6 in 10

It wasn’t supposed to be this difficult. James Paxton, who is off to a historic start in his young Yankees career, exited after the sixth with a 5-0 lead thanks in part to another home run from Clint Frazier. Tommy Kahnle pitched a scoreless seventh inning, and then Aaron Boone handed the ball to Chad Green for the eighth. Things did not go as planned from that moment on.

 After a bloop single, a walk, and another single, the bases were loaded with nobody out. Boone called on Adam Ottavino in the hopes that his electric stuff would get the Yankees out of the inning with minimal damage. Simply put, it did not. Adalberto Mondesi roped a two-run double to right field, Alex Gordon cleared the bases with a three-run homer, and Hunter Dozier followed with a solo shot of his own. Just like that, the Royals took a 6-5 lead.  

 However, that lead wouldn’t last long. After Mike Tauchman doubled to start the bottom of the frame and advanced to third on a Mike Ford groundout, Austin Romine singled him home to tie the game. That would not be the last of Romine’s heroics. But before he would have a chance to win the game, though, Aroldis Chapman and Zack Britton pitched the ninth and tenth innings and were able to prevent further damage. 

Tauchman walked to lead off the bottom of the tenth, and Gio Urshela followed suit. Then, in his first major league at-bat, pinch hitting for Mike Ford, Thairo Estrada successfully bunted Tauchman over to third. That set the table for Romine, who smacked a long fly ball over the head of Billy Hamilton in center, plenty deep enough for Tauchman to score the winning run.

What’s Next? 
The Yankees begin a lengthy West Coast road trip tomorrow night in Anaheim, as J.A. Happ (0-2, 7.23 ERA) will take the mound for New York, and Matt Harvey (0-2, 9.64 ERA) will likely get the start for the Angels.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
