Yankees hold on to win fifth straight

The Yankees came into the game last night looking to win their fifth straight game and guarantee at least a series tie against the Angels. It wasn’t pretty at the end, but they were able to do exactly that behind a solid offensive performance and a great start by Domingo Germán.

Luke Voit got the Yankees on the board early, hitting his sixth home run of the year in the first inning to put New York in front 1-0. The Yankees added another in the top of the second, when a Mike Ford single, Mike Tauchman walk, and Thairo Estrada’s first major league hit, a liner to right, loaded the bases for Tyler Wade. Wade grounded into a fielder’s choice, but Ford scored to give the Yanks a 2-0 lead.

The Bombers stretched their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth when a Brett Gardner single was followed by a Mike Ford home run, the first of his young career.

A leadoff double followed by an error by Germán set Los Angeles up in the bottom of the fifth. Germán was able to avoid any serious damage but did surrender one run on a fielder’s choice by David Fletcher, making the score 4-1. Germán ended up giving the Yankees exactly what they needed following the 14-inning game last night. 6.2 strong innings while allowing just one unearned run.

New York added some insurance runs late. Gleyber Torres singled to score Voit and Austin Romine grounded out to score Torres in the seventh. Voit hit his second home run of the game in the eighth, pushing the lead to 7-1.

Those insurance runs ended up being vital. Chad Green loaded the bases in the eighth before giving up a grand slam to make the score 7-5. Luis Cessa was able to come in and finish the eighth inning, holding Los Angeles at five. Zack Britton nailed down the ninth, securing the 7-5 win for the Yankees.

What’s Next?
The Yankees and Angels continue their series tomorrow night, with first pitch at 10:07 PM EST. The probable starters are C.C. Sabathia and Felix Peña.
