Tauchman and Gardner go deep in Yankees’ 6-2 win

Coming off an impressive two-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees were flat yesterday as they dropped game one of the four-game series versus the lowly Royals. However, the bats woke up today and backed CC Sabathia’s second consecutive start in which he allowed zero earned runs.

The Royals struck first in the third inning. Following an outstanding double play turned by Clint Frazier, Luke Voit committed an error, which eventually led to the Royals scoring their first run of the ballgame. This lead did not last though as Brett Gardner homered to drive in himself and Tyler Wade, who singled in the previous at-bat.

Other than the hiccup in the third inning and four scattered walks, Sabathia was phenomenal again in this game. He allowed no earned runs in five innings, while striking out five Royals.

Mike Tauchman got the Yankees some insurance in the fifth as he took Jakob Junis deep for his second career home run making it a 3-1 game.

The Royals were only able to muster one more run off the Yankees pitching staff as Alex Gordon doubled in a run off of Luis Cessa in the sixth. Other than that RBI, the trio of Adam Ottavino, Tommy Kahnle, and Zach Britton put up zeros for the remainder of the evening.

The Yankees manufactured some more insurance runs in the late innings. DJ LeMahieu scored Aaron Judge on a sacrifice-fly in the sixth, Luke Voit scored on a passed ball following a Clint Frazier walk in the sixth, and Tyler Wade drove in Kyle Higashioka with a bunt base-hit in the seventh.

What’s Next?

The Yankees will look to go-ahead in this series  as they will play game three of this series tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 PM EST. Masahiro Tanaka will oppose Heath Fillmyer.
