Yankees survive late scare, beat Giants 6-4

Once again, the New York Yankees put a tally in the win column, something they have done eight of the last nine times they have taken the field.  It was a beautiful day for matinee baseball in San Francisco and the Yanks played an all-around solid game, beating the Giants 6-4 while securing a series win ahead of Sunday’s matchup.

This lineup has continued to fight off the injury bug, putting up at least five runs for the fifth game in a row.  Nine Yankees reached base in the contest.  Gary Sanchez led the way with four-RBI while Gio Urshela continued to impress with a 3-for-4 day and some nifty glove work.

The Yankee bats started slow as Derek Holland faced the minimum through two innings.  Newly acquired Cameron Maybin led off the top of the third with a walk, and later came around to score the first run of the game via a two-out single courtesy of DJ LeMahieu.

The Bombers bats stayed quiet in the fourth but blew this one open in the top of the fifth inning.

It started with back-to-back singles from Maybin and Thairo Estrada.  Two batters later, LeMathieu walked, loading the bases for Luke Voit with just one out. Voit moved everyone up a bag as he was hit by a pitch, extending his on-base streak to a league high 38-games.  Next up was Gary Sanchez who was looking for his first hit since April 9th after spending two-weeks hampered with a calf injury.

Sanchez got that hit and more as he hammered a Derek Holland sinker 467-feet to left-center.



These were the last runs the Yanks scored, but it was enough as J.A. Happ had a dominant outing.  The lefty made his best start of the season throwing 95 pitches over seven innings, giving up five hits and zero runs.  The start lowered his season ERA by over a point.

Happ had four 1-2-3 innings, and only allowed two runners to get into scoring position all day.

Luis Cessa took over in eighth with a six-run lead and set down the Giants in order.  Fast-forward to the bottom of the ninth where Cessa was three-outs away from salting this one away until things got messy.

Back-to-back singles to lead off the inning followed by a fielder’s choice left runners on the corners when former Yankee Yangervis Solarte wall-scraped a three-run homer to right, cutting the six-run deficit in half.  Cessa got the next batter to line-out but gave up a two-out solo shot to Erik Kratz.

Now up just two, Aaron Boone pulled Cessa and turned to closer Aroldis Chapman for the game’s final out.  Chapman struck-out Pablo Sandoval on four-pitches.

What’s Next?
The Yankees will wrap up this series in San Francisco looking for the sweep and their 11th win in their last 13 games.  Domingo German (4-1, 1.75 ERA) will square-up against Dereck Rodriguez (3-2, 3.54 ERA) in Sunday’s matinee.  First pitch, 4:05 EST.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
