Yankees drop fourth straight in a rainy loss to Chicago
They’re bruised. They’re battered. They’re dinged up, but nevertheless, the show
must go on. The Yankees looked to bounce
back after an ugly three game sweep at the hands of the Houston Astros. The middling Chicago White Sox are in town, and
the Yankees unfortunately kicked the series off with a 9-6 loss.

J.A. Happ took the bump and started off
the game by grooving a first-pitch fastball down the middle that Leury Garcia drove
over Brett Gardner’s head in center for a lead-off double. Happ was able to quickly bounce back, striking
out Tim Anderson and Jose Abreu, but gave up a 2-out single to Yonder Alonso
which drove in Garcia for Chicago’s first run of the rainy evening. Happ was able to get the third out of the
inning with a Yoan Moncada flyout to left.
In the bottom of the first, Aaron Judge faced
SP Lucas Giolito and was able to reach first base on an E6 with one out. His at bat was followed by walks to Luke Voit
and Gleyber Torres which loaded up the bases for Greg Bird who promptly struck
out. DJ LeMahieu stepped up with two down and
ripped a single to right which drove in Judge and Voit. Gleyber was caught in a pickle for the third
out, but the damage was done. It was 2-1 Yanks, going into the second.
Happ started off the second by giving up
another leadoff hit but was eventually able to get out of trouble. He popped Garcia up to first base for the
third out with two runners left in scoring position.
The Yankees’ bats stayed alive in the bottom
of the second. Clint Frazier led things
off with a walk and Gio Urshela moved him over to third with a double to
right-center. Austin Romine hammered a
single up the middle which drove in Frazier placing runners on the corners with
no one out. Gardner’s flyball was not
deep enough to bring Urshela in from third, but Judge’s hard-hit line drive to
left was. The sacrifice increased the
Yankee lead 4-1 before the inning ended.
Happ gave up his third straight leadoff
hit of the game, this time to Tim Anderson.
However, Anderson was stranded at third by the end of the inning. The
Yankees’ third inning at bats were rather uneventful aside from DJ LeMahieu’s
second single of the game.
The top of the fourth started off with a first
pitch groundout. Two walks and a
strikeout later, Chicago’s leadoff hitter Leury Garcia stepped up for his third
at bat of the evening against Happ. He
ripped a double down the right field line driving in 2 which shrunk the Yankee
lead 4-3.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the fourth, Brett Gardner also found himself behind in the count. With two strikes, he was able to get on top of a high fast ball and hit it roughly 316 feet just eclipsing the short porch in right. His solo shot extended the Yankee lead 5-3.
J.A. Happ’s night ended after the
beginning of the fifth inning.
He gave up his fourth leadoff hit of the evening and with a runner on
first, Yonder Alonso hit a frozen rope into the right field seats. Happ’s command was off the entire night,
consistently missing Romine’s set up spots.
Jonathan Holder came on in relief, but promptly gave up a home run as
well. The 425 foot shot to dead center was Eloy Jimenez’s first career home run. His big hit gave the White Sox a 7-5 lead.
Jonathan Holder stayed on in the
sixth. He was seemingly able to put the
big home run behind him. He got out of
the fifth by striking out the following three batters and then retired 3 of 4
hitters in the 6th inning.
The bottom of the sixth started off with
a walk to DJ LeMahieu followed by a single from Clint Frazier, a really good
piece of two-strike hitting. That
wrapped up the night for Lucas Giolito. Jose Ruiz came on in relief to face Gio
Urshela with two on and nobody out. Gio was
able to stay inside a fastball and lift a single into the outfield grass. LeMahieu came around to score on the hit, 7-6
White Sox. After an Austin Romine
strikeout, Jose Ruiz’s night was over.
Left-hander Jace Fry came in to face Brett Gardner with one away. He got Gardner to ground into a fielder’s
choice and his night was over. Chicago manager,
Rick Renteria, did not want to leave the lefty in to face Judge, so right-hander
Nate Jones came on. Judge worked the
count full before getting hit by a pitch.
Luke Voit stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded, 2 men out, and
down by 1 run. Voit flew out to left, leaving three ducks on the pond.
Chad Green started the seventh inning. After getting the first man out, Green gave up a solo home run to Eloy
Jimenez, his second of the night. Green responded
by giving up another home run, this time to James McCann, his first home run of
the season. The tarp came out
immediately after as the game went into a rain delay. The rain continued to fall so the game was
called after seven innings. An appropriately
dreary end to a dreadful game. The
Yankees dropped their fourth straight with a 9-6 loss to Chicago.
