Paxton, Yankees dominate Red Sox in 8-0 win

James Paxton pitched a gem in his first start against the Red Sox in pinstripes.  The Big Maple threw eight shutout innings with 12 strikeouts against only two hits and one walk.  Six of his strikeouts came in-a-row between the sixth and eighth innings.  His counterpart for the day, however, did not fare as well.  Chris Sale lasted five innings, giving up four runs on seven hits.  The outing actually improved his ERA, as he came into the day with an ERA of 9.00.  After Sale’s first time through the Yankees’ lineup, the Bombers dominated the Red Sox pitching, scoring eight runs on 11 hits.

The scoring got started off in the bottom of the third inning.  After a Brett Gardner leadoff double, Austin Romine moved Gardy over to third base with a sac-fly to right.  A Mike Tauchman strikeout brought up DJ LeMahieu who hit a single to the opposite field against the shift to score Gardner and give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.  Luke Voit kept the scoring going following an Aaron Judge walk with an RBI single to center, scoring LeMahieu. 

The Red Sox tried to retaliate in the next half inning with the top of their batting order due up.  Paxton got himself into some trouble with a leadoff walk to Mookie Betts and a double from Xander Bogaerts off the top of the wall to give the Red Sox second and third with no outs.  After that, however, he buckled down, getting JD Martinez and Steve Pierce to fly out to shallow right, and ending the inning with a strikeout of Mitch Moreland.

The Yankees continued their scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning with a leadoff homerun off the bat of the red hot (pun intended) Clint Frazier, stretching the lead to 3-0 in favor of the good guys.  Tauchman added another run later in the inning with an RBI double that scored Austin Romine from first base.

The Yanks kept adding on in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Gio Urshela got on base with a leadoff double followed up by a walk from Gardy.  After Romine bunted the two over, Mike Tauchman knocked them in with a three-run bomb.  The homer was the first of his career, and he sent it into the second deck in right field. 


Gleyber Torres finished off the scoring in the seventh inning with a solo homerun to make the score 8-0.  Joe Harvey threw a clean inning in the ninth to seal the win.

The Yankees look to finish the two-game sweep tomorrow, as JA Happ looks to bounce back from a rough start his last time out against Chicago. He'll be opposed by Nathan Eovaldi.  Game is a 6:35 PM start.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
