Breaking: Green demoted, Sanchez reinstated

Right-hander Chad Green and backup catcher Kyle Higashioka have been optioned to Triple-A. In the corresponding moves, left-hander Stephen Tarpley has been called up and Gary Sanchez has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list. Jomboy of Talkin’ Yanks was first on the Green demotion and the moves were later confirmed by Yankees PR.

Green getting sent down comes as no surprise after a disastrous start to 2019. After a breakout 2017 campaign that had his ERA sub-2.00, Green followed it up with a solid 2018, but was nowhere near as dominant. In 10 appearances so far this season, Green’s allowed 14 runs across 7.2 innings (16.43 ERA) while striking out seven. His last two outings were the final straw in demoting him, as he’s gotten just one out and allowed five hits and seven runs.

Tarpley returns to the Yanks after being demoted earlier this season. He gave the Yanks nine effective innings late last season and was expected to be the bullpen’s lefty specialist this season. Although he did originally make it, he was sent down after allowing two runs in three innings as well as some breakout performances from Luis Cessa and Domingo German and the return of Tommy Kahnle.

Sanchez's return comes at the perfect time with an ailing lineup. Sanchez had already racked up six homers in 41 ABs on the season before being placed on the IL.
