Yankees take game one in San Francisco for 15th win of the season

The Yankees piled on 15 hits tonight in San Francisco to take game one of this three-game set against the Giants by a score of 7-3. In a lineup stacked with right-handed batters, Luke Voit and D.J. LeMahieu led the pack with three hits each. 

The Yankees took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. LeMahieu led off the game with a hard-hit double and scored on an extra-base hit from Gleyber Torres. The second run was scored on an RBI single by Cameron Maybin in his first at-bat as a Yankee. San Francisco answered back with a run of their own when former Yankee Tyler Austin scored on a Buster Posey sac fly. 

In the third, Luke Voit extended his on-base streak to 37 consecutive games with a sharp line drive to right field, eventually scoring on an RBI from Gio Urshela. Voit kept the action going in the fifth inning, scoring LeMahieu on a double. However, he was caught tagging at third base after a fly ball from Torres. Three singles in a row allowed the Yankees to tack on another run in the top of the sixth, making the score 5-1. 

Paxton managed to settle down until the bottom of the sixth frame when the Giants scored two runs. He led off the inning with a walk to Tyler Austin, who then scored on a double from Posey. Yangervis Solarte singled to score Posey. Tommy Kahnle came in to relieve Paxton with two outs and a man on first base. Kahnle struck out Brandon Crawford to escape further damage, but the Yankees’ lead was cut to 5-3. 
Zack Britton, who came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh, did not have his best stuff today. He quickly managed to get two outs before walking the next three batters. Fortunately, Adam Ottavino came in to save the day, striking out Posey to end the seventh. Ottavino then pitched a scoreless eighth inning to keep the lead at 5-3. 

 It took over eight innings, but the Yankees finally hit a home run today. They added two insurance runs when Luke Voit belted his eighth homer of the season. Aroldis Chapman came into the non-save situation and got the job done, giving the Yankees a confident 7-3 win to open-up their weekend series by the bay.

What’s Next?
In game two of the series in San Francisco, the Yankees will send out J.A. Happ (0-2, 5.96 ERA) to face off against Derek Holland (1-3, 4.33 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 PM EST on YES.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
