The postseason is finally upon us, and it’s time to look at the options present for the Yankees in terms of who will patrol the  outfield.  It ’s a mix of established names and some key players who have stepped up in a major way this season.   Right Field: Aaron Judge   The Yankees’ talisman and  one of the brightest young stars in baseball, Judge was able to hit 27 homers and drive in 55 runs despite being limited by injury some of the year.  He’s also coming in hot, posting a .991 OPS through the last 20 games of the regular season.  Judge is also terrific defensively, with 7 outfield assists in the regular season.  He will look to carry a lot of the load offensively in this postseason, batting out of the #2 spot almost exclusively.   Photo Credit: Getty Images Left Field: Giancarlo Stanton   Stanton’s 2019 regular season has been one to forget,  having only played 18 games due to a variety of injur...

This week, the New York Yankees faced off against the Rays and Rockies at Yankee Stadium in the blistering summer heat. After losing the first game to Tampa, the Bombers rebounded and won five out of their next six games. Gleyber  Torres and Gary Sanchez became the first pair of Yankees teammates ever to homer in three straight games as the Yankees took down the Astros 4-1 and extended their winning streak to seven games.   The night also marked the return of Aaron Judge to the Yankees lineup, although he was unable to make an impact, going 0-4 with a pair of strikeouts. Sanchez’s blast was the more impressive of the two, coming in the third inning off Brad Peacock after a Cameron Maybin single. The ball traveled over the opposing bullpen and deep into the stands. It was measured at 481 feet, the fourth longest homer hit this year according to  Statcast . Maybin had to leave the game after the home run, with what was later announced as a strained calf. However, Aaron Boone has announced Maybin will face a significant injured list stint, so the injury might be worse than that. On the eve of Aaron Judge’s return to the lineup, the Yankees began an important four game set with the Houston Astros. While the Yankees have certainly been missing Judge, they have gotten healthy in other areas and rolled out a fearsome lineup to face their fellow contender on Thursday night. The Yankees opted to use this game as a bullpen day and the group turned in an effort that was good enough to bring home a win after their offense took over. Coming into the season, the Yankees’ bullpen was expected to be one of the best relief groups ever assembled. For the most part, that has been true. Their top four options (Chapman, Ottavino, Britton and Kahnle) have all been elite. However, there are two underachievers that Brian Cashman and co. need to address quickly: Luis Cessa and Jonathan Holder. With Aaron Judge’s impending return, and a true roster crunch on New York’s hands, the Yankees’ management team should look to remove one of these two from their roster rather than the red-hot Cameron Maybin. The offense came early, in the middle, and late for the Yankees as they took game two of this three-game series against Tampa Bay. The team’s home run streak continued to 21 games and they extended their division lead against the Rays with tonight’s win.   New York’s offense struck quickly off opener Ryne Stanek, with a Gary Sanchez sacrifice fly in the first inning to get them started. However, the hitting faltered a bit after the introduction of Ryan Yarborough, who held the Yanks scoreless for three innings. In the fifth, more runs would come off a few singles by DJ LeMahieu, Luke Voit, and Gary Sanchez again, and the big blows would come in the seventh and eighth. With the Yankees looking forward to some big returns and additions to their lineup this week, Masahiro Tanaka took the mound on Monday night and reminded everyone that the Yankees have some pretty good players at their disposal already. Aided by some early offense, Tanaka was never threatened and turned in the best outing by a Yankees’ starter this season. For much of the 2019 season so far, the Yankees have played great baseball. They are currently sitting in first place and have grabbed that spot in the standings despite an almost comical slew of injuries that began in spring training and hasn’t let up since. While the injuries have struck every part of the roster, one group that was particularly hard hit was the outfield. The Yankees entered this season with a group of outfielders that boasted multiple All Star and MVP-caliber players. After an exciting 10th inning win in Cleveland, the Yankees are coming back home for a two-game series against the crosstown rival Mets.  The Yankees, who are now tied for first place, will be trying to right the ship after a little slide last week where they lost five of seven.  The Mets on the other hand are coming in a game under .500, and are third in the NL East, five games back of the Phillies.  Last week, they impressively took two of three from both the Giants and Rockies.  In 2018 the Yankees were 4-2 in the subway series, and hopefully they can use this quick series to get back on track.

In game two of the day-night double header, the Yankees found a way to attack and score runs early, propelling the team to their second victory of the day. Playing their first double-header of the 2019 season, the Yankees took care of business against the last-place Orioles, taking both games thanks to solid pitching and a power display on offense. The weekend showdown against the Rays is one of the most pivotal series of this young season.   With the Yankees 1.5 games behind the Rays in the AL East, the club sent Domingo Germán out to the bump.   The Rays countered with a young ace of their own, the American League’s April Pitcher of the Month, Tyler Glasnow. Seeking to bank another series win before a weekend showdown against the first place Tampa Bay Rays, the Yankees sent JA Happ to the hill against Mike Leake. While yesterday’s game was a one-sided blowout in favor of the Mariners, this game was a pitcher’s duel from start to finish. Happ was looking for a rebound performance from his rough time out against the Minnesota Twins and while he didn’t go deep into the game, he pitched well enough to get the ball to the Yankees’ bullpen with a lead and ultimately a 3 – 0 win. The Yankees piled on 15 hits tonight in San Francisco to take game one of this three-game set against the Giants by a score of 7-3. In a lineup stacked with right-handed batters, Luke Voit and D.J. LeMahieu led the pack with three hits each.
