Yankees sweep day-night double header with game 2 win in KC

In game two of the day-night double header, the Yankees found a way to attack and score runs early, propelling the team to their second victory of the day. Chad Green started the night on the mound against KC’s Jorge Lopez. Neither starters lasted long, yet it didn’t matter for New York as the relievers came through and got the job done.

The scoring began early in game two, with Kansas City taking a 1-0 lead in the first off of a struggling Chad Green, who started in an opener situation.  Green gave up back-to-back singles and an RBI double to Hunter Dozier with two outs.  Clint Frazier came close to catching Dozier’s fly ball, which would have been a fantastic play.  However, Clint was able to make the throw home to Austin Romine, tagging out Alex Gordon to prevent any further damage. 

The second inning was a big one for the Bombers.  The Yankees plated five runs, starting with a two-RBI single from Austin Romine. Cameron Maybin followed suit with a double that scored Gio Urshela and Romine.  DJ LeMahieu brought Maybin home with an RBI single.  Kansas City had no choice but to make a pitching change, replacing Jorge Lopez with RHP Glenn Sparkman.  While Sparkman was able to end the inning, he surrendered another run to the Yankees in the third to make the score 6-1.  
By the bottom of the second, Chad Green was replaced by Chance Adams.  He pitched a solid outing, but shaky defense from both Brett Gardner and Frazier got him into trouble.  The Royals scored in the third when Brett Gardner couldn’t keep track of a sharp fly by Adalberto Mondesi.  KC tacked on two more runs off of Adams in the fourth inning on back-to-back doubles and a single.  The score was still in favor of the Yankees, but their lead was cut short to 6-4. 

Things settled down following the fourth frame.  Jonathan Holder relieved Adams in the sixth and threw only nine pitches in a notable 1-2-3 inning.  The Yankees threatened in the seventh with two outs and the bases loaded, but DJ flew out to Whit Merrifield to end the inning.  Kansas City stopped the Yankees from scoring any more runs with solid relief pitching. 

The Yankees’ relievers also continued to impress today.  Tommy Kahnle followed Holder with a three-up, three-down seventh.  Zach Britton pitched a scoreless inning, and Aroldis Chapman came out firing in the ninth.  He cut it close, allowing a run on a sac-fly.  Maybin made a great play to catch the ball in foul territory but the speedy Billy Hamilton tagged to make the final score in this game 6-5 Yankees. 

What’s Next?
The series finale kicks off at Kauffman Stadium tomorrow at 2:15 EST. The Yankees are starting Domingo German (9-1, 2.60 ERA) against KC’s Danny Duffy (3-1, 3.45 ERA).

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
