Gary Sanchez’s blast caps off Yankees’ epic comeback win versus Baltimore

What looked to be a lost game, following a disastrous start by JA Happ, turned into one of the Yankees’ most dramatic comeback wins of the young season. The bullpen held the Orioles to one run, following Happ’s departure, and the Yankees rallied for nine runs in the last four innings of play.

Happ looked completely out of it today, as the Orioles hit him hard. In only 3.2 innings of work, he allowed nine hits, six runs, and two home runs. The Yankees only managed to put up one run in the game’s first five innings courtesy of a solo Gleyber Torres home run.

The Yankees’ bullpen did its job today, giving the Yankees a chance to claw back against one of the league’s worst pitching staffs. Cessa, Holder, Britton, and Chapman combined for 5.1 innings of one-run ball. The one Oriole run scored off the bullpen was a sacrifice fly off of Cessa in the bottom of the sixth.

The Yankees started their 6-1 comeback in the sixth. Gary Sanchez singled sharply to center field, scoring DJ LeMahieu. Kendrys Morales then grounded out to shortstop, scoring Aaron Hicks who advanced to third on Sanchez’s hit. Following the conclusion of the sixth inning, Orioles’ starter, Andrew Cashner’s, day was done.

The Yankees continued to scrap together runs in the seventh as LeMahieu singled in Gio Urshela to make it a 7-4 ballgame. Aaron Hicks followed up with a sac-fly to score Cameron Maybin, pulling the Yankees within two runs.

Gleyber Torres continued his torching of the Orioles as he blasted his second home run of the day in the eighth to make it a one-run game.

In the ninth, Aaron Hicks cashed in on his second sacrifice fly of the evening to knot the game at seven runs apiece. With a runner on third base and two outs, Luke Voit popped up behind the plate in foul territory. The ball should have been caught, thus sending the game to extras, but miscommunication by the Orioles led to it being dropped. Voit ended up walking, which put two ducks on the pond for Gary Sanchez. Sanchez made the Orioles pay for their miscue as he deposited a three-run bomb into the outfield seats to make it a 10-7 game, the final score of the ballgame.

What’s Next?
The Yankees will look to continue their hot stretch of play in game two tomorrow. The Yankees will send Domingo German to the mound. The Orioles will counter with RHP David Hess. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM EST.
