Kikuchi pitches gem, Loaisiga struggles in Mariners’ 10-1 rout of Yankees
The Yankees looked to clinch the
series win over the Mariners on Wednesday night, but ran into the buzzsaw that was Seattle LHP Yusei Kikuchi. Jonathan Loaisiga took the mound
for New York, filling in for the injured James Paxton. Loaisiga did not have his best
stuff tonight, allowing four runs and six hits in only four innings in the 10-1 defeat.

Yusei Kikuchi dominated the
Yankees’ hitters, pitching 7 2/3 innings, while only allowing four baserunners.
The Mariners took an early lead
as Loaisiga ran into trouble immediately in the first inning. Allowing a leadoff single
to Dee Gordon lead to him scoring on a sac fly from Edwin Encarnación later in the
inning. 29 pitches later, Loaisiga escaped a jam by striking out Jay Bruce, leaving
two runners on base.
Mitch Haniger led off the top of
the 3rd inning with a solo home run, extending Seattle’s lead to 2-0.
Back to back doubles by Ryon
Healy and Dylan Moore, followed by an RBI single from Dee Gordon gave the Mariners a
4-0 lead in the 4th inning.
Luis Cessa relieved Loaisiga in
the 5th inning, retiring the leadoff batter then allowing a solo home run to Encarnación,
extending the lead to 5-0.
Cessa pitched three solid innings
out of the bullpen, allowing one run while striking out five batters.
The Yankees were hitless until
the bottom of the 6th inning, when Mike Tauchman hit a one-out bloop double down the
left field line, followed by a LeMahieu single to right. Luke Voit put the Yankees on the
scoreboard with a sac fly, bringing in Tauchman. Clint Frazier was called out on
strikes, ending the Yankees rally.
Gio Urshela was removed from the
game in the bottom of the 7th inning after fouling a ball off of his knee. He was
replaced by Thairo Estrada, with LeMahieu shifting to play third base and Estrada at second.
Jake Barrett took over for Cessa
in the top of the 8th inning. Barrett allowed five runs, five hits, and two walks while
striking out three in two innings.
Ryon Healy drove a 2-run home run
to right field, his third hit of the night, increasing their lead to 7-1.
The Yanks tried to get a two-out
rally going in the bottom of the 8th, with Tauchman and LeMahieu once again
delivering singles, but Voit was unable to produce.

After recording the first out of
the top of the 9th, Barrett walked Vogelbach and Encarnacion. The next batter,
Domingo Santana, doubled to right field scoring Vogelbach, giving the Mariners a
8-1 lead. Omar Narváez lined a single just beyond the reach of Gleyber Torres, driving
in two more runs, extending the lead to 10-1. Barrett eventually stopped the bleeding,
retiring Dylan Moore for the last out of the inning.
The Yankees were unable to
complete the miraculous comeback against Seattle, managing to only get a Clint
Frazier single in the bottom of the 9th inning.
What's Next?
The Yankees and Mariners will conclude their four-game set in the Bronx on Thursday evening with JA Happ (1-3, 4.93) scheduled to take the ball for New York. He will be opposed by Mike Leake (2-3, 4.91). First pitch scheduled for 6:35pm.
