Torres shines as Yankees sweep twin bill from Orioles
Playing
their first double-header of the 2019 season, the Yankees took care of business
against the last-place Orioles, taking both games thanks to solid pitching and
a power display on offense. The two wins put the Yanks at a season-best 26-16,
just two games worse than the team’s 28-14 mark through 42 games last year.

Game
one was all about the long ball. The Bombers clubbed four home runs, two by
Gleyber Torres. In the first inning, Gary Sanchez tied the game at one with his
12th big fly of the season to right-center. Sanchez has hit six home
runs in his last 13 games. After J.A. Happ allowed another run in the top of
the second, New York answered again. Gleyber Torres hit the first of his two
homers, and Cameron Maybin went yard for the first time as a Yankee to put the
team up 3-2. The Yanks would score two more runs this afternoon, both coming in
the bottom of the fourth. Torres hit his second of the day, and seventh of the
season, to give his team a 4-3 lead. Finally, a two-out single by Mike Tauchman
drove in New York’s fifth run to increase their lead to two. The Yankees had
seven hits, two each for Sanchez and Torres.

On
the mound, J.A. Happ didn’t really have it today. The big lefty gave up three
runs, and two home runs, over the first four innings of the game. But the
veteran still managed to give his team 5.1 innings on an efficient 64 pitches. Then,
Aaron Boone took a risk and went to his bullpen early despite today’s twin
bill. The Yankee manager trotted out his four best relievers and was rewarded
for it. Adam Ottavino, Tommy Kahnle, Zack Britton and Aroldis Chapman combined
to throw 3.2 shutout innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven to
close out a 5-3 win in just two hours and 12 minutes. After the two team’s
combined to score eight runs over the game’s first four innings, the final five
frames were scoreless.
In
the nightcap, the story was once again Gleyber Torres. The Yankees’ shortstop
hit what would be the game’s decisive solo home run in the fourth. It was the
third home run of the day for the 22-year-old infielder, whose OPS is now up to
.824. The first of the two other New York runs came an inning earlier on a two-out,
slump-breaking, RBI double by Luke Voit. The hulking first baseman had been
stuck in a 1-31 drought before driving in DJ LeMahieu to open-up the scoring. Voit
then drove in the Yankees’ third, and final, run of the game in the seventh on
another two-out hit. The 28-year-old finished 3-4 on the day and had three of
the team’s seven hits. Of note, Aaron Hicks made his season debut and went 0-4
with three strikeouts, and Kendrys Morales made his Yankees debut, going 1-2
with a single and two walks.
Domingo
German got the start and continued his season-long stretch of dominance. The
young right-handed cruised through six innings of four-hit, one-run baseball
and needed just 65 pitches to do so. Then, German ran into trouble in the
seventh, loading the bases on two hits and a walk, but pitched out of the jam to keep Baltimore at just one run. It was exactly what the team needed after
burning through the entire back-end of the bullpen in game one today. German
also managed to strike out eight Orioles before handing it off to the bullpen. In
the eighth, Zack Britton came on for the second time today and pitched another
scoreless frame. The Southpaw has thrown 6.1 scoreless innings in a row. Aroldis
Chapman closed the door in the ninth for his second save of the day, and 11th
of the season, to secure the 3-1 victory.

What’s Next?
The
Yankees get another day off tomorrow before welcoming in the Tampa Bay Rays for
a three-game, weekend series in the Bronx. The probable pitching matchup is CC
Sabathia (2-1, 3.26 ERA) for the Yanks and a starter (or opener) to be
determined for the Rays. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 7:05pm on WPIX and
MLBN.
