Chad Green's resurgence has come at the perfect time for the Yankees

Image
Chad Green has been the Yankees’ best reliever in 2020, and it’s quite possible he has been the best late-inning option in the entire sport. The 29-year-old righty enters play on August 14th with a 0.82 ERA, 0.36 WHIP and 12.27 K/9. Green’s struggles early last season were well-documented, and he never entirely put them behind him in 2019. 18 games into this shortened season and that feels like ancient history. Gio Urshela is proving 2019 was no fluke

Image
I’m not typically a fan of small sample size theater, but it’s hard to deny how good Gio Urshela has looked through his first 16 appearances of 2020. Entering the season, there were some questions regarding how Urshela would follow up his stellar 2019 campaign. After all, prior to last year’s breakout, Urshela was a widely unknown 27-year-old with a career batting average of .225, that the Yankees acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays for $25,000 in August of 2018. He was known as a solid defensive player with little to no offensive ability. That narrative changed drastically a year ago. Photo Credit: John Minchillo/AP Photo

Series Recap - NYY @ TB (8/7 - 8/9): Yankees hit rough patch, drop three out of four in Tampa

Image
The 2020 New York Yankees have officially hit their first rough patch of the season. The Yankees lost three out of four games to the Tampa Bay Rays this weekend to cut their American League East lead to just two games. The problem this weekend was largely on offense, as the Yanks only scored seven runs in their three losses (2.3 runs per game). New York has now lost five of its last seven games, and seven of eight at Tropicana Field dating back to last season. Photo Credit: Chris O'Meara/AP Photo In the series opener on Friday night, the Yankees’ bats fell silent. In one of their worst offensive performances in recent memory, New York managed just two hits and failed to score a run against six different Rays pitchers. The Yanks only real scoring chances came in the seventh and eighth innings when the team went a combined 0-4 with runners in scoring position. One of the defining moments of the game occurred in the eighth when Mike Tauchman led off the frame with a double,...

Yankees Postseason Pitching Overview

Image
October is here and 11 wins and 297 outs separate the New York Yankees from their 28th World Series title. To get there, Aaron Boone will have to get creative with his pitching staff. Gone are the days of counting on a starter to go more than five innings in a postseason start, and the Yanks just won 103 games despite having a starting rotation that was, at times, shoddy. In last year’s postseason, New York got 27 innings out of the bullpen and just 17 frames from their starters. Ideally, it will be more of a 50/50 split this season, but the team only has three true starters heading into October due to injuries, ineffectiveness and a suspension. Series Preview: Yankees at Red Sox (7/25-7/28)

Image
For the first time all season, the Yankees are headed to Fenway Park. This weekend’s four-game series presents an opportunity for the Yankees to put the final nail in the American League East coffin of their long-time rival. Entering play on Thursday 12 games up on the Red Sox in the division, a series win, or possibly even a split, would make it next to impossible for the Red Sox to make a run at the AL East over the season’s final two months. New York comes into the series at 66-35, which is the best record in Major League Baseball. Photo Credit: Billie Weiss/Getty Images

Appreciating the longest-tenured Yankee

Image
It’s time to give Brett Gardner the credit he’s due. In his age 35 season, the Holly Hill, South Carolina native has played in a team-high 87 games, batting .253 with 15 home runs, 41 RBI, eight stolen bases and an .809 OPS. He’s on pace to set a new career-high in home runs (current best is 21 in 2017), and his .809 OPS would also be the best of his 12-year career. In a season where seemingly every Yankee has been injured, Gardner has been one of the lone healthy players, and he has been much more productive than most could’ve imagined. Photo Credit: AP Photo

Recapping the first-half for the five Yankees All-Stars

Image
After an extremely successful 57-31 start to the regular season, the Yankees had five players named to the American League All-Star team. The five All-Star selections are the most the Yanks have had in a single-season since being awarded eight nominations back in 2011. What makes that fact even more impressive is that New York didn’t send perennial All-Star candidates like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Dellin Betances or Luis Severino this year, because each of those players have missed most, or all, of the season with injury. In their stead, the five players that will be listed below have helped the team not only stay afloat, but excel. Photo Credit: Noah K. Murray/USA Today Sports

Yankees week in review (7/2-7/7): New York splits series' with Mets and Rays before All-Star break

Image
In the final week before the All-Star break, the Yankees split a two-game series with the New York Mets and a four-contest set with the Tampa Bay Rays. The 3-3 week puts the Yanks at 57-31 and eight games up on Tampa for first place in the American League East heading into this week’s festivities in Cleveland. Photo Credit: Scott Audette/AP Photo

Series Preview: Yankees vs. Red Sox in London (6/29-6/30)

Image
It’s the weekend that baseball fans from across the pond have been waiting for all season. Major League Baseball’s inaugural London Series, between arguably the league’s two most storied franchises, takes place this Saturday and Sunday. These two rivals have played each other five times so far this season, with the Yankees taking home four of those wins. Coming into the series, the Yanks are a season-high 10 games ahead of the Red Sox in the loss column. The Yankees come in at a season-best 52-28 (winners of nine out of 10), while Boston enters plays with a 44-38 record after winning six of their last 10 games.

Torres walk-off clinches 8-7 win, series sweep of Toronto

Image
In a back-and-forth slugfest, the Yankees erased two deficits, including one of five runs, to beat the Blue Jays, 8-7, in walk-off fashion Wednesday. The win clinched a series sweep of the Blue Jays for the Yanks, and they finished off their final home stand of the season’s first half with a 9-1 record. After today’s win, New York is now a season-best 24 games above .500 at 52-28. They lead the American League East by 6.5 games. Photo Credit: Seth Wenig/AP Photo

The struggles of Cessa, Holder and what it might mean for Cameron Maybin

Image
Coming into the season, the Yankees’ bullpen was expected to be one of the best relief groups ever assembled. For the most part, that has been true. Their top four options (Chapman, Ottavino, Britton and Kahnle) have all been elite. However, there are two underachievers that Brian Cashman and co. need to address quickly: Luis Cessa and Jonathan Holder. With Aaron Judge’s impending return, and a true roster crunch on New York’s hands, the Yankees’ management team should look to remove one of these two from their roster rather than the red-hot Cameron Maybin. Bats come to life, Cortes sharp in 8-4 Yankees win

Image
Coming into the night on a three-game losing streak, and after dropping eight of their last 11 contests, this game was one the Yankees needed. Fortunately for them, the bats came to life, and the pitching was solid, as New York downed the White Sox, 8-4. The win, coupled with Tampa’s loss, allowed the Yanks to regain their half-game lead in the American League East despite their recent struggles. Photo Credit: Nam Y. Huh/AP Photo

A Tale of Two Games: Yankees split twin bill with Mets

Image
For the third time in the last 27 days, the Yankees found themselves playing a double-header. In the first two twin bills, New York won both games, but today they split the day/night duel with their cross-town rivals, the Mets. After going 1-1 today, the Yankees are now 41-25 on the season and sit tied atop the American League East standings with the Tampa Bay Rays. Photo Credit: Frank Franklin III/AP Photo

Sanchez and Torres keep on rolling as Yanks take down Orioles 7-5

Image
The Yankees made it four wins in a row, and eight in their last nine contests, with a 7-5 victory over the Orioles in Baltimore. The Yanks have scored 41 runs in their last four games and are very clearly playing their best offensive baseball of the season right now. With the win, New York improves to 31-17 and maintains its two game advantage over the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. Photo Credit: Nick Wass/AP Photo

A look inside the unexpected revival of the Yankees best reliever

Image
At this time last season, Tommy Kahnle had a 6.14 ERA and was rehabbing a nagging shoulder injury he suffered just six games into his 2018 campaign. He would appear in two more games for the Yankees in late May before being sent down to triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for most of the summer. All in all, Kahnle’s disastrous season ended with him posting a 6.56 ERA and 1.63 WHIP in 24 games for New York. It was a far cry from the 2.70 ERA he put up in 32 games for the Yankees in 2017 after coming over in a trade from the White Sox. It would have been easy for the team to give up on the 29-year-old and make him the forgotten man of their stacked bullpen, but they gave him one more chance and now they’re reaping the rewards. Torres shines as Yankees sweep twin bill from Orioles

Image
Playing their first double-header of the 2019 season, the Yankees took care of business against the last-place Orioles, taking both games thanks to solid pitching and a power display on offense. The two wins put the Yanks at a season-best 26-16, just two games worse than the team’s 28-14 mark through 42 games last year. Photo Credit: Frank Franklin II/AP Photo

Sanchez lifts Yanks to 6-3 win over Minnesota after Paxton exits early

Image
Back home for the first time in 12 days, the Yankees took down the Twins, 6-3, for their first win over a team with a winning record all season. New York is now 1-5 against squads that are above .500, and 9-7 in the Bronx in 2019. Photo Credit: AP Photo/Frank Franklin II

Yankees implode late in 11-5 loss to the Angels

Image
Carrying a six-game winning streak into the series finale in Anaheim, the Yankees looked poised to sweep the Angels after jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the fifth. Then, the wheels came off, as New York allowed the Halos to score 11 unanswered runs over a three-inning span, en route to an 11-5 drubbing in Southern California. The lone bright spot was Luke Voit, who went 3-5 on the night, and   7-18 (.389) with two home runs in the series. Photo Credit: Marcio Jose Sanchez/AP Photo

Corner not turned: Yankees drop series opener to Royals, 6-1

Image
Riding high after last night’s dramatic win over Boston, the Yankees failed to carry that momentum into tonight’s series opener with the Royals, falling 6-1 to Kansas City. With the loss, New York is now a combined 3-7 at home against projected American League cellar dwellers Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago and Kansas City.  Photo Credit: Julio Cortez/AP Photo

Torres delivers four hits, bats awaken in 8-4 Yankees win
