Sanchez and Torres keep on rolling as Yanks take down Orioles 7-5

The Yankees made it four wins in a row, and eight in their last nine contests, with a 7-5 victory over the Orioles in Baltimore. The Yanks have scored 41 runs in their last four games and are very clearly playing their best offensive baseball of the season right now. With the win, New York improves to 31-17 and maintains its two game advantage over the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.

For the third straight night, the Yankees put on a light show at Camden Yards. With five more home runs tonight, the Bronx Bombers have now hit 11 balls out of the ballpark in the first three games of this series. New York got the scoring started in the top of the second on a two-run big fly by Thairo Estrada. The rookie infielder is hitting .324 with a .964 OPS in 37 at-bats this year. If everyone in the lineup wasn’t so hot right now, Estrada would certainly be getting more playing time. Two batters later, the second inning damage wasn’t done just yet. That’s because DJ LeMahieu went yard for the fourth time this season, and second time in the last four games, to put the Yanks up 4-0.

In the top of the third, Gleyber Torres smacked his 11th home run of the season to center, the first of two for him on the night. Sandwiched between those two Torres blasts was yet another home run for Gary Sanchez to make it 6-1. Sanchez has hit nine of his 15 home runs in his 10 games against Baltimore this season. Even more impressive, the Yankee catcher has seven homers in 27 at-bats at Camden Yards in 2019, per Katie Sharp. The final run of the game for New York came in the fifth on Torres’ aforementioned second big fly of the ballgame to make it 7-2. As for just how impressive the 22-year-old has been against Baltimore, here’s the list of his accomplishments: 10 of his 12 home runs this season have been against the O’s; he’s just the fourth player in MLB history to have four multi-home run games against one team in the same season…it’s May 22nd; he has four home runs in this series alone. After his second home run of the game, Orioles play-by-play man Gary Thorne could hardly take it (see below).

On the mound, CC Sabathia wasn’t great, but he didn’t have to be with all of the run support. After coasting through the first two innings, Sabathia allowed five runs over a three inning span from the third through fifth frames. The first of the Orioles runs came on an RBI double by the red-hot Hanser Alberto to make the score 5-1. Baltimore then scored their second run after a hit batter and a throwing error by Gleyber Torres. Despite this, the Yankees led 7-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but that’s where Sabathia really ran into trouble. Richie Martin and Renato Nunez each hit home runs to bring the score to 7-5 New York. Following that, with two outs, allowed a double to Pedro Severino and single to Joey Rickard, but Severino was gunned at home plate by Brett Gardner to end the inning and the threat. As for Sabathia, the big lefty was done after five innings and told media after the game that his chronic knee issue flared back up. He said he expects to receive a cortisone injection and be placed on the Injured List.

Out of the bullpen, Aaron Boone had to use all of his big guns after using only David Hale last night. Tommy Kahnle and Adam Ottavino pitched a scoreless inning apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to hold down the Yanks’ 7-5 advantage. Both relievers have ERA’s well under 2.00 at this point, with Kahnle at 1.42 and Ottavino at 1.54. After that, Boone took a bit of a risk and gave the ball to Chad Green in the eighth. Green rewarded his manager’s faith by working around a leadoff hit batsmen and firing a scoreless inning for the first time in three games. Aroldis Chapman then came on to shut the door in the ninth inning for his 13th save of the season to preserve the 7-5 win.

What’s Next?

The fourth and final game of this series will be played tomorrow afternoon. The probable starters for that game are Masahiro Tanaka (3-3, 3.09 ERA) for the Yankees and Dylan Bundy (2-5, 4.66 ERA) for the Orioles. First pitch is scheduled for 12:35 pm on YES and MLB Network.
