Happ, Urshela lead Yankees to a series win over Mariners

Seeking to bank another series win before a weekend showdown against the first place Tampa Bay Rays, the Yankees sent JA Happ to the hill against Mike Leake. While yesterday’s game was a one-sided blowout in favor of the Mariners, this game was a pitcher’s duel from start to finish. Happ was looking for a rebound performance from his rough time out against the Minnesota Twins and while he didn’t go deep into the game, he pitched well enough to get the ball to the Yankees’ bullpen with a lead and ultimately a 3 – 0 win.

Runs were hard to come by for the Yankees after their win to open this series, but they were able to net an early run in this game and ride their pitching to a win. In the bottom of the second inning Clint Frazier and Gleyber Torres opened the frame with back to back singles. The next two batters went down in order before Cameron Maybin doubled to bring home Frazier. That was the extent of the offense in this game until the eighth inning, when the Yankees put men on base. That set the stage for the Yankees' new hero Gio Urshela, who singled to right field and drove in DJ LeMahieu and Brett Gardner.

Happ did not pitch deep into this game but tossed five shutout innings before handing the ball off to Adam Ottavino and the bullpen. Ottavino allowed the tying run to reach third base, before inducing an inning ending double play to preserve the lead.

Tommy Kahnle continued his stellar work during this rebound season, pitching yet another clean inning.

From there, Zack Britton took care of the eighth inning. Aroldis Chapman surrendered a solo home run to Domingo Santana but ultimately locked down the save to send the Yankees to Tampa Bay with a win and a 5-2 record on this homestand.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason. Hearing this makes me chuckle as the Yankees have the dollars to field a $500 million pay roll if they wanted to, but their dedication to winning just hasn’t been there since the passing of good ole’ George.
