Yankees acquire Kendrys Morales from Athletics

On Tuesday night, the Yankees acquired 1B/DH Kendrys Morales from the Oakland Athletics, in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations. Morales, in his 13th major-league season, was designated for assignment on Monday.

Morales is in the final year of a three-year, $33 million deal he signed with Toronto back in 2016; he was acquired by the A’s on March 27. The soon-to-be 36-year-old is sitting on a paltry .204/.310/.259 slash with just one home run and seven RBIs.

Although not performing up to his usual standards, the veteran slugger has hit at least 20 home runs in each of his full seasons since 2012. He received the 2015 Silver Slugger Award at designated hitter, leading the Royals to a World Series win with a .290 average, 22 homers and 106 RBIs.

While this may look like a bit of a surprise at first glance, there may be more to the situation. Miguel Andujar will make a decision tomorrow regarding season-ending shoulder surgery; even more so after this move, the expectation is that he will undergo the procedure. Additionally, the Yankees seem to have no idea what’s wrong with Giancarlo Stanton. Aaron Boone today described it as a shoulder strain, with a timetable for his return still unclear.

With two options at designated hitter now out of the fold and Luke Voit desperate for an occasional off-day, look for Morales, a switch hitter, to get regular at-bats considering the current state of the Yankees. If he can manage even somewhat of a return to form, the low-cost move will pay dividends for the Bombers as they chase first-place.

 UPDATE D 11/18/15 We’ve all heard it: The Yankees aren’t likely to be big spenders this offseason.
