Six implications of the Edwin Encarnacion trade

Image
News broke last night that the Yankees had made their first splash of the summer trade season by acquiring slugger Edwin Encarnacion from the Seattle Mariners. Encarnacion is the American League home run leader and will be a welcomed addition to the team he has hit well against over the course of his career. To many including myself, this trade was very fuzzy at first glance. The Yankees did not have a need to acquire an offensive player, especially when their pitching has been their weakness, thus far. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton’s imminent returns further blurred the reasoning behind this trade. However, after further thought, I have come up with six implications that result from this trade, all of which help make sense of this move. Kathy Willens | AP

Voit's 7th inning blast propels Yankees to 7-3 win in Game 1 vs. KC

Image
After being rained out on Friday evening, the Yankees and Royals took to the field on Saturday afternoon for the first game of a day-night doubleheader to begin their three-game series.  The Yankees came in hot, riding a five-game winning streak, and sent JA Happ to the mound.  He was opposed by righty Jakob  Junis  of the Royals.  A seventh inning monster two-run home run off the bat of Luke Voit proved to be the difference in this one as the Yankees would go on to win by a score of 7-3.   Photo Credit: Charlie Riedel/AP Photo The Yankees’ offense started off hot in this one, plating two runs off  Junis  in the first inning.  Aaron Hicks drew a walk to start things off, before Voit singled to left to put first and second on with no outs.  Although both Gary Sanchez and  Gleyber  Torres would strike out on sliders low and away well off the plate, the inning still proved fruitful when Clint Frazier ripped a two-ru...

BREAKING: Yankees acquire David Robertson, Tommy Kahnle and Todd Frazier from White Sox

Image
The Yankees and the White Sox struck a blockbuster deal on Tuesday night after the Yankees officially acquired 3B/1B Todd Frazier, RHP David Robertson and RHP Tommy Kahnle. In return, the White Sox acquired a package headlined by OF Blake Rutherford that included prospects LHP Ian Clarkin, and OF Tito Polo as well as RHP Tyler Clippard. Photo Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports For the Yankees, they are reuniting with Robertson who is signed through next season where he is owed $13 million. As for Kahnle, the 27-year-old is controlled through 2020. Frazier, on the other hand, is a free agent at the end of this season as he is effectively a rental who solves the Yankees problem at either first or third base. The Yankees could elect to resign Frazier to a short term deal this offseason. Frazier has hit to a disappointing-looking .207/.328/.432 line, but he has 16 homers, 15 doubles and 44 RBIs. He has been victimized by bad luck with a .214 BABIP, and he is not a big...

Rapid Reaction: Yankees acquire Tyler Clippard from DBacks to fortify bullpen

Image
The Yankees front office had been mulling offers for Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller during the days leading up to both of them being dealt. As expected, Chapman was the first one to be traded, but the Yankees then surprised many by dealing Miller to Cleveland this morning for an incredible prospect haul , giving the Yankees one of the top farm systems in all of baseball. Still, the Yankees are interested in being competitive, in addition to embracing a sell-off, so they went out and acquired Tyler Clippard from the Diamondbacks for Vicente Campos to take over the eighth inning role. Rapid Reaction: Yankees trade Andrew Miller to Indians for huge prospect package

Image
When I woke up this morning, and saw multiple notifications on my phone indicating that the Yankees had traded Andrew Miller, I entered into a state of shock. As we know, the writing has been on the wall for a couple of months, but knowing that the Yankees are officially in all-out sell mode is a bit of culture shock. In exchange for the All-Star reliever, Cleveland sent minor-league infielder Clint Frazier, and pitchers Justus Sheffield, Ben Heller, and J.P. Feyereisen to the Bronx. This is a move that may sadden some of us Yankees fans, but we must realize it is a necessary step in the path towards stockpiling minor league talent in a lost season. Photo by Elsa/Getty Images
